Irish citizens are being asked to use their voice through their vote on two separate proposed amendments to the current text of Article 41 of the Constitution in the upcoming referendum on 8 March 2024 on care and the family.

The University of Limerick is hosting an information event on Wednesday the 21st of February at 6.30pm to provide factual information on these issues. The session will be chaired by retired Chief Justice Frank Clarke.

Our speakers are Dr Laura Cahillane, Associate Professor in the School of Law and expert in constitutional law, and Dr Carmel Hannan, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, an expert in Irish family dynamics and child development. The University of Limerick Law Society will also breakdown the voting process and registering to vote. After the talks, the floor will be opened for a Q&A session with the panel. 

Pizza will be served on the evening and we hope to see you there!

Intervarsity Law Summit

The Intervarsity Summit is the biggest intervarsity legal event in Ireland and the very first of its kind. The seven Irish Law Schools who came together for this event in 2022 were UCC, Trinity, UCD, NUIG, UL, Maynooth and DCU. The Summit is a ticketed event which completely sold-out in 2022. The event boasted over 700 delegates last year including former President Mary McAleese, numerous Supreme Court and High Court Judges, Dr. Rhona Mahony, Mr. Colm O’Gorman and Senator David Norris.

 

This year we are moving the Intervarsity Law Summit to Dublin. The Intervarsity Law Summit 2023 will take place over three days and will feature various interactive events such as the only Intervarsity Careers Fair in Ireland and various mixer events where students and sponsoring guests can mingle. This year QUB and TUD will also be in attendance. As well as this, the weekend will feature the National Moot and Mock Trial Finals, the Intervarsity Gala Dinner, a panel discussion by an esteemed panel of invitees and a Keynote Presentations from Lady Hale and Mary Robinson. Throughout the weekend we will also be raising money for a chosen charity. ?

They have successfully influenced legislative change in Ireland as the government have recently announced that nightclub and pub opening hours are set to be extended in the new year. This is just one part of their mission.

Our Mná and the Law event took place on International Women's Day and was a huge success. We had fantastic speakers from UL, UCC, and from Enactus UL, specifically from their project Anytime of the Month. 

Topics such as the Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020, Article 41.2 of the Constitution and the Period Products (Free Provisions) Bill were discussed by our panellists, after which a Q&A took place.

We feel a communal break from study helps relax everyone's mindset and a bit of respite is required in these busy weeks. Free snacks and popcorn are also provided as a mandatory horror movie staple. The UL Law Society together with the UL School of Law will host a Careers Networking Evening on Tuesday 15th of October from 6pm to 8pm in the Foundation Building.

The objective of this event is to bring students and graduate recruiters together in a professional and friendly environment. This event is organised with specifically Law Plus, Law & Accounting and LLM students who are seeking graduate and internship opportunities in mind.

Catering will be provided on the evening and so will light refreshments. Furthermore there will also be professional headshots taken on the evening.

It is essential for those seeking coop and graduate opportunities to take advantage of this event.

Our academic officer, Louise Kennedy, has organised our first (of many) study skills workshop.  This workshop will focus predominantly on recommended reading, articles and databases. Perfect or incoming first years, who are feeling overwhelmed by the volumes upon volumes of prescribed reading, or anyone at all who just wants to brush up on thier skills. We aim to create an informal atmosphere, in contrast to lectures, whereby our guests feel more comfortable to ask questions of their fellow students.
