We are in the new student center this year, with our new server room!
It will take a bit of time to figure out how we will use it, but its exciting news.
The Computer Society is for people who are interested in all things computer related.
We try to do a mix of hardware, software and social events since all three support each other.
Some of our Interests:
When we arent in our server room you can find us on our Discord Server: https://discord.skynet.ie
It is one of the best places to chat with fellow nerds as well as get announcements of our activities.
We run weekly+ meet-ups where we dive into all things tech.
These events range from programming competitions to movie nights to debates to collabs with other Clubs/Societies.
Othertimes we get speakers in from our alumni network from companies such as: Google, Microsoft, Analog Devices, ACI, Intel, Ericsson and many more.
Our events are open to all levels of expertise whether you’re a programming expert or you think an abacus is superior.
We also try to go to conferences and trips to broaden our viewpoint of the world.
This includes annual trips to PyCon and SISTEM.
On top of that we also try to go on a EuroTrip every year, most recently to Berlin in May 2025, and prior to that Paris and Milan.
Plans are being drawn up for this year!
At the heart of the society is the computing cluster affectionately known as Skynet.
We host many services on Skynet:
The cluster provides a way for our members to get hands on experence with server hardware, networking and industry grade tools.
All the tools we use on the cluster are FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) and we have a strong ethos in contributing to Open Source projects. (Linux/NixOS/...)
This experience can be found invaluable when looking for jobs post-UL.
It helps us mantain a good working relationship with ITD.
On top of that it is a good way to link with and assist other Clubs/Societies.
All of the people who maintain this cluster have been drawn from the society.
We also appropriately named all the machines after artificial intelligences from movies and tv (check the top of each file for an explaination for the name).
As a Society we are student lead, so if you have ideas for an event you'd like, or if there are events you would like more of, please let us know through discord/email/Instagram etc!
We are also always looking for folks to join teh committee to lead the Society forward
