This week we will be having an EGM plus an event that mixes social with technical. We are looking to fill these wonderful positions for the rest of this semester:

• Assistant PRO.
• Health and Safety Officer. (This one is core-committee too!).

We will be going through the roles with a small presentation to let you know what they are about. Also, a small reminder that being in committee is a good opportunity for your CV when you are applying for Co-Op (as it's volunteering). We encourage you to assist and exercise your right to vote even if you are not interested in being committee. Now, let's talk about the important stuff... ahem Because we have recently launched the new Computer Society Minecraft server, we want to help everyone get onto the server and play together! We will also cover how to install the Simple Voice Chat mod so you can interact by in-game voice chat. What you will need to have for this:

• Your laptop, and maybe a mouse if you need it to play,
• An Official (paid) Minecraft account,
• A Minecraft launcher: we will cover instructions for the official one and MultiMC, but you can use any launcher you want,
• Your Discord account, which should be linked to your UL Wolves email; we will also help you link it if you're having trouble with it.

This event will be held on March 6th at 18:00 in the Courtyard Room of the Student Life Building (Enter Student Life main entrance, walk through first corridor on your left, and the first door on your left). Also, I almost forget... there will be FREE PIZZA. Yes, you read right: you can come, either become committee or vote for new people to fill those rules and come back home with your tummy full of pizza! Are you really going to miss it?

This week is a technical event, and well we're going to be on the little less technical side of things this time around. We're going to be covering Free Open Source Software (FOSS) that anyone can contribute to, meaning you don't have to program to be able to contribute for the greater good. I will mainly be covering OpenStreetMap as it's a project I'm passionate about, but I will touch on other ways people can contribute to various other projects. Also note that the room the event will be held is going to be in the Courtyard Room of the Student Life Building (Enter Student Life main entrance, walk through first corridor on your left, and the first door on your left)

On Wednesday (14th) we are hosting a screening of Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture"

Randy was a Computer Science Professor who pioneered VR and worked with Disney and EA and consulted for Google.
(Also technically a Hollywood Actor)

We are back in business for a new semester, meaning pizza!!!

This will be a social/networking event featuring Computer Science students who have just returned from their Co-op. These students will give ~5 minute talks each about what they experienced and gained from their time in the field.

Then we'll have a mixer with pizza! As per usual, this will take place on Wednesday in Student Life Room 3.

This week join us as we take a break from the crushing exam stress and assignment deadlines as we prepare for the upcoming Advent of Code!!!!

Advent of Code is a yearly event that happens every December where a programming challenge is released each day until Christmas. This Wednesday we will have a look back at previous Advent of Codes and prepare for this year's challenges!

This week we will be having a collaborative event with the new Games Dev Society to help them get word out about what they have to offer, so please come along if you are interested!

During the event, a Games Dev Society committee member will give an introduction to basic game engines such as Unreal Engine, Godot and, COUGH. Unity. COUGH. Oh sorry my mouth is kind of dry. Anyway. They will also go over some lesser known game engines such as proprietary and hobbyist engines!

As per usual this will take place on Wednesday in Student Life Room 3, look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you to all those who attended PyCon with us on Saturday, it was a very successful event and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

This week will be a social event where we talk about and recap PyCon; whether this be chatting about the stuff we learned, the people we met, or giving advice on how we can improve on organising the event for next year.

PyCon is an annual conference for all things python related, it features practical workshops (e.g., 'Modern Python through FastAPI and friends') and interesting presentations (e.g., 'How I lost 1000 euros betting on CS:GO with machine learning'). To prepare those of you attending Pycon with us this coming Saturday our first year rep Samir has prepared a Python Catch-up event to get your minds set on Python. You do not have to be attending PyCon to attend this event, everyone is welcome!

This will be an introduction to Python, so whether you are inexperienced or need a refresher this is for you!

We are entering Week 8 of ze semester! Ah Ah Ah!

This will be an interactive event where we use the terminal and a combination of commands in order to get a "flag" which progresses us up through levels. The main goal of this event is to give people an understanding of how to SSH into a server, navigating file structures, other basic commands and concepts are which are useful in a terminal environment.
NOTE: a laptop is required to participate

We're entering week 6 and we're trying something new; being social!
This will be a discussion style event where we talk anything tech, whether that be AI or the hundreds of euro of debt you have after building a PC, all suggestions are welcome! Members of committee will be present to ensure any debates that may arise are somewhat civilised.

 As usual this will take place this Wednesday in Room 3 of the Student Life building from 6pm to 9pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

All alone on a Wednesday night? Boy do I have a conveniently timed event for you!

We are now entering week 5 of the semester, take a break from those looming deadlines by... you guessed it! Learning! BUT FUN!

Lead by Morris with assistance from Brendan, they'll do their best to give a simple, concise and fun overview of topics within Computer Science that are rarely covered in college. It's almost as if there is a missing semester. Wouldn't that be a cool name for an event of some sort..

Anyway, moving on. This event is not limited to only people with Computer Science knowledge. If your future career uses any sort of technology or project management, then you are almost guaranteed to run into these somewhere in the future. Topics covered in this event include: IDE's, Git, WSL2 and file organisation (folder structure).

We swear everything will run smoothly this time. If you too have an innate hunger for knowledge then this event is perfect for you. We hope to see you on the 11th of October at 6:15pm in Room 3 of the Student Life building! ...

Wah, oh, hello. Computer. Computer people. Event. Yes, yes yes. Uh, this is a new event. for the... computer... society. My apologies for the sleepiness people. So sleepy I forgot to send this event announcement out yesterday... But after a week long holiday and bank holiday, don't we deserve just an extra little bit of time for relaxation? I've been proposing the entire month of April off to my lecturers. Their enthusiasm for such an idea is through the roof! Well, it might have been more along the lines of something like "throwing me through a roof". I can't recall.

But to get some steam behind my idea, we're gonna be having some time off as a society collectively today and sticking with a social meetup for this evening. Wednesday (Today), 18:15, Room 3, Student Life. You know the drill. What shall be there? I dunno! But it'll probably be fun. Entertainment channeled through the power of friendship or something.

'Scuse me. Out of the way gentlemen. Oh, why hello, society members... Sorry, I'm late to my board meeting of investors and people who smoke cuban cigars all day. You see... I've undergone an incredible transformation. I live a glamorous lifestyle among high-minded thinkers like myself... Money, luxuries, and exploiting 3rd world countries for cheap labour... I am no longer Evan Buggy. I am Elon Buggy.

A luscious world of opportunity awaits you too, my friend! Want to know how I made my wealth, dug myself out of a hole? All it took was a simple 2 step plan. Step 1: Inheritance from my father. Step 2: Own an incredibly popular social media platform while firing all the engineers so I don't have to pay them!

And then, on top of all of this, I have to do something unprecedented. I have to actually RUN the social media! I have to make sure it does not physically blow up! How is something like this even expected of people of my capabilities? But, perhaps, if you too knew how to host your own social media, maybe one day you'll have the same riches as me! Unless it's a public business. Then I'll buy it and make it worth 50 cents.

Clang. Clang. Bonk. Boink. Phew... Excuse me, Computer Society members.. it's just that it's a hard day out on the construction site today. The familiar tune of the bangs and cranks of all the tools needed for the job... Seeing all our men out today working is truly a beautiful thing to behold. What are we building? An SQL database, duh. Perhaps our idea of construction is a bit different from a general public's perception... And maybe the constant clangs and boinks from my PC are a sign I should get a new hard drive. But whether you're at a construction site next to 5 cups of coffee or at your desk next to 5 cans of Monster, everyone knows you still need the right tools for the job. And even if you don't have the qualifications for a safety passport (In which the Computer Science equivalent is knowing how to exit Vim), coming to our next event to know a thing or two about the tools of the trade would not go to waste. Be there for 18:15 at - you guessed it - Room 3 of the Student Life building on Wednesday, the 8th of March for an education in how to be a more proficient programmer. We're gonna cover topics like version control, Git, IDE's and how to overall be more efficient with your computing skills.

Going to be honest here. I recommend going to this one because I still can't really get my head around it. I mean, we do computer stuff with these languages right? And yet when I talk French, Spanish, German, or even Swahili at VSCode nothing happens. Like, what's the deal? Then some guy comes in and says "No, you're meant to use Python. Or C, or C#". And I'm like, what? This guy's talking about snakes and the ocean? And then he goes, "Have you heard of Rust?" and then he gets dragged out of the room kicking and screaming? Like, what?

Crazy story. Anyways, be there to witness my PowerPoint skills. Peace.

Click click click... type type type... Bingo. I'm in. I've successfully hacked the matrix mainframe and injected the code into the server. I've logged in using the master password... and am ready to break into the terminal with the zip fie in memory to send out this new Computer Society event...

Wait, what? What do you mean you don't believe me? You think I'm just spewing a bunch of jargon to make myself look like I know more about computers and that I'm more entitled to be PRO than someone else? Pssh. Pure lies you treat yourself with, my friend. I'll have you know I'm an expert at emails! And, uhh, other computing related concepts of course, such as... Um... Mouse, keyboard... The On and Off button... uhh...

OK, you're right. I'm not the smartest around here! But I gotta keep up the facade. Committee says they're gonna throw rocks and pebbles at my window at night if I don't keep up my work. But I can only go on for so long before they start hitting me with hard-hitting questions, like what a "Linux" is.

So, what can I do about this? Well there's one thing I can do. And that is show up at the Bandit Wargames event, Wednesday the 22nd of February, at 6:15PM in Room 3 of the Student Life building. Where we'll be going over terminal commands and using the basics of them to solve problems. You will need a laptop and a terminal of some kind (E.g. via WSL or Powershell on Windows or a terminal on a Linux install). Hopefully, I'll be able to keep up my job at this rate with this newfound knowledge.

Ho ho ho! Greetings one and all, It's time to come together and celebrate the happiest, most joyous time of year! Happy holidays to everyone from the Computer Society!

...Wait. Hold on. I'm getting a call from the higher-ups. Hm. OK. So, apparently, it isn't actually Christmas anymore., and I can't open up events with an out of season holiday. But I've already been going around saying "Merry Christmas!" to everyone for weeks now. Probably explains all the funny looks at my santa costume at Stables.

Well, if we can't have Christmas every day, we'll have to take matters into our own hands with, what is obviously the epitome of Holiday cheer: Advent of Code! C'mon, like, everyone and their grandma does it every year. You've never had a true holiday experience if your family has never gathered around the tree with Vim open on their thinkpads.

Advent of Code Refactored will take all the puzzles from the previous month and allow you to tackle them together as a team and collaborate and share solutions and knowledge with your peers. It takes place in room 3 of the Student Life building at 18:00 on the 1st of February (This Wednesday!). Make sure to bring your own laptop!

It's been a while, hasn't it? We hope you all had a fantastic break over the Christmas holidays and that you're as excited to get back to university as we are to make new and interesting events for this upcoming semester. We've got some real exciting things coming soon, so I personally advise you watch this space...

But for now, to help you settle into college life again, our first event is a general, relaxed get-together for the return of the society. There'll be Arduino kits, Virtual Reality, Nintendo Switch multiplayer and more. Join us at 6:30pm in Room 3 of the Student Life building on Wednesday, the 25th of January!

It appears our graphic designer is not as excited for this semester as we would've hoped. He hasn't answered his phone in about 3 weeks so we're just going to assume he's still in hibernation in the Wicklow Mountains. Hopefully. So we had to pull out and repurpose this poster from the archives that shouldn't be too dated... Do you think anyone will notice? Fingers crossed.

This week will be our circuitry event!

For the Computer Society's next event, we'll be investigating the wider world of computer circuitry.

We will be taking a look at circuit boards, LEDs and sensors, as well as some high-tech equipment like Arduino boards.

The event takes place at 6:30pm, at SG20 (Schumann Building). Be sure not to miss out! See you there!

This week will be our code-off! 

This is where you can show off your coding skills, and win prizes in the process! There will be a €2 fee to compete, with one for all vouchers to be won!

There will be separate competitions for beginners and intermediate levels, and we also have a template that can work for any IDE. 

Don’t forget to bring your laptops and we hope to see you there!

This week we will be having an Open Night for the Computer Society, where we will have some of the equipment that we have for you to check out and to hang out with like-minded people.

Hope you are all having a good weekend. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances last week, we were unable to host our AGM. However we will be hosting this Wednesday instead! It will start at 7:00pm and will be taking place in the Schuman Building (The Building connected off from Kemmy Business School, the entrance is behind the metal statue) in SG20. Make sure to come along, even if you do not want to join committee, as there will be free pizza for everyone present! Below will be an overview of all of the committee roles on offer:

The committee is split into three main groups; Core, non-Core and then the Skynet team.

The Skynet team is the only thing that we don’t vote on and is made of the Senior admin and some Junior admins.  

The Core positions include President, Secretary and the Treasurer. 

President - The main contact point for outside the society and liaise with C&S and head of the society. Also Chairs meetings and sets the agenda 

Secretary - Takes minutes at meetings and distributes to members. Helps out with the day to day running of the society and at events. 

Treasurer - In charge of the finances of the Society and makes sure the budget is made for the end of the year.  

We’d recommend previous committee members to go for these as previous experience is vital for the core roles of the committee. So if you’re new to Clubs and Societies committees then the other roles are great roles to gain initial experiences. The rest of the committee positions are the non-core positions. 

Events - help organise events and make sure people are there to help bring equipment to events and that a room is booked. 

PRO - Emails, Instagram posts, make posters, take pictures 

PRO Assistant - Emails, Instagram posts, make posters, take pictures 

Programming and Technology - Organise technical events eg. Code-off 

Health and Safety and Equipment officer - keep stock of our equipment and keep an eye on the society's health and safety at events.  

First Year Rep - Engage with first years and bring concerns to the committee 

These are all great roles to gain experience and to have a big impact on the running of the society with not a lot of work required. The people that held these roles will also give a quick summary of what the role involved. 

We look forward to seeing as many of ye as possible at the event.

This week, we’ll be having our second code off. It will be on Wednesday, which is the 23rd at 7pm in S114. You will need to pay €2 for entry and apply on UL wolves. There are prizes to be won!! There will also be questions for all levels of skill and a separate contest for first years. Please remember to bring  your own laptops. 

We are holding our retro gaming event in S114 at 7pm this Wednesday. We will be showing off how to set up a raspberry pi as a retro gaming console. We will show you how to use it to emulate some old consoles. We will also show you how you can run some more modern console emulators on your PC.

This week we are having a movie night on Tuesday the 1st at 7pm (sharp) in Room 3 in the Students Union (beside the games/pool room).
We will be watching The Imitation Game, about Alan Turing, a British mathematician, who deciphers the German enigma code using an early form of computer.

And to celebrate Pancake Tuesday there will be some pancakes and snacks at the event.

On Wednesday we are running a Charity event for #TeamSeas in the First7Weeks hub in the courtyard.
It's to the right of the chapel close to the O'Mahony's. Just look out for our banner and people playing beatsaber and a racing sim.

We will be matching the amount that we raise on the day. Its €2 to enter and all donations are going to TeamSeas.
The highest beatsaber score at the end of the day will either win a Brew Bros voucher or a One4All voucher (tbd).
The event will run from 11:00 to 16:00 and is open to all members and non-members, hope to see ye there.

Hello everyone,

Linux event this week!  From running over 90% of the internet to running retro emulation devices, Linux is one of the most widespread operating systems. Regardless of what Microsoft wants you to believe, this Wenesday we will demonstrate that Linux is just as capable as windows.

We will run through the install process of pop os (a popular Linux distribution), and we will show you how you can play games as well as customize Linux to your liking.

S114 in the Schuman Building at 7pm (If the doors are locked, go through Kemmy).
Feel free to bring along your own laptop.

Join us on Wednesday 3rd November at KBG14 for our much awaited code off competition at 7pm. Please bring your laptops if you’d like to participate.  

There are prizes for 1st and 2nd place and for best first year (The prize pool depends on number of contestants that enter). The event is open to all members, non-members can take part if they become a member on the day. 

There is an entry fee of €2 to compete, non-members will have to become a member first as well.

As always please book beforehand here on wolves if you can.

Join us this Wednesday the 20th at 7pm in EGO10 (the main building, inside the ski-slopes, go left and past the seating area, it's the big hall, look for our banner) for our Skynet Survival Guide.

Society members can setup their own personal account and website on our Skynet Servers. You can use WordPress to do so more easily. Hosting is free for society members. The setup is relatively easy, all attendees need is a laptop. WordPress is a free and easy to use website builder that requires no code. And Skynet is the society's own servers located on UL's campus. The default name of each member's website will be skynet.ie/~username but this can be changed if you purchase your own domain. After setting up your website, you will be able to access it at any time and if you need any help a committee member can help you out in our discord channel. You can bring friends along if they would like to setup their own website and they can join the society at the event.

If you can please send an email in advance to accounts@skynet.ie to request a Skynet account and database as it will let you get set up faster at the event.

We will be having our Relaunch event this Wednesday the 6th of October between 19:00 and 21:30 in KBG13 in the Kemmy Business School.

There will be Tech, Games, Pizza and more!! Come along and get to know the Computer Society, our tech and what we have to offer. Get to know the current committee and meet new friends in your fellow members. We will be showing off some of the tech we have and giving people a chance to fly some small drones etc.

Health and Safety is important for Clubs and Societies. Masks will be required at this event and all government guidelines and social distancing will have to be followed. Please use hand sanitizer on entering and leaving. If you have any symptoms or are a close contact please refrain from coming.

We are having our final event of this academic year tomorrow Wednesday the 14th at 7:30pm. We are going to behaving a social evening where we will be playing some jackbox and among us to finish off the year.

For this years show and tell it will be held virtually and each participant will get a chance to showcase their project and there will be prizes for the best project(s).

You can take part as either a contestant/competitor and take part in the competition and show off your project or as just a member to watch the event and take part in the votes.

Feel free to come along and test your knowledge there will be a prize pool of €100 euro for best first year and best individual and there will be a fee of €2 to enter. We will be showing you how to connect to your email to get notifications about new emails. We will also be showing you how to use the temperature and humidity sensor included in the kit.

We will be hosting an online talk with Dr. Richard Stallman (rms) on A Free Digital Society at 7PM on Wednesday the 10th of March.

Dr.Richard Stallman is the founder of the Free Software Foundation and the head developer of the GNU Operating System (gnu.org). His work focuses on Free Software, that is, software that is free as in you have the freedom to use the software however you want, modify it and redistribute it (think of the French/Spanish word libre) and not necessarily free as in free of charge (i.e. the word gratis).

The talk will open with the moral issue of free software and why nonfree programs are unjust, then go on to other forms of widespread digital injustice that damage our freedom and privacy.

In the spirit of Free Software, we must stream this talk on our own server using Icecast, so the maximum number of viewers we can have will be limited by our connection. If you know a group of people who want to watch, you could get into a call on Jitsi Meet (https://meet.jit.si/) and have one person share the video and audio with the others. If the stream has reached capacity, you will still be able to watch a recording later.

This week's event we will be revisiting the tech kit again. This time we'll be exploring the OLED screen. You'll learn how to connect it up, set up the required code for it and display a basic hello world. Then we'll show you how to display logos/images on the screen. Then we'll use the wifi of the ESP to sync with an NTP server and show the date + time on the screen.

Get your Pyth-On with UL Economics and Investment Society: Learn to Screen a Company's Key Financials, using Python

Ever wondered why GME stocks were heading into the ground? How to spot the next Tesla? Maybe you can! Find out this Wednesday at 7 pm.

This event is a collab between UL Compsoc and the ULE&I society, Darragh Collins the societies Chief Investment Officer who will walk us through the most important financial figures of a company, what they mean and what figures to prioritise examining. The second half will be presented by Mark McNabola who will scrape key financial data about companies from the web and automate the process of evaluating companies.

This week we are having our first look at the Tech Kits. We will start by installing the Arduino software for the ESP8266 and then move on to setting up some LEDs on the board and controlling them via a website that you can interact with. Come along and get your introduction to the kit. In the coming weeks, we'll also look at controlling the OLED screen that comes with the kit and displaying logos, the time and some text. We will also show you how to integrate the humidity and temperature sensors and displaying them. Finally, we will show you how you can use the ESP to notify you of emails or other notifications.

This week, on Thursday at 7pm, we will be hosting a tutorial on the rest api. We will be showing what it is and how to use it. This could be useful for your own projects aswell. Hope to see you there! 

Our first event this semester is going to be an introduction to our Tech Kit series. We will be explaining what they are and what events we plan to do with them.

The Tech Kit is a bundle that includes an ESP8233, resistors, different coloured LEDs, transistors, stickers and a face mask. We plan to run 3 different events with the kit showing ye some cool ideas and projects that you can do with the ESP. These include a Notification system, controlling LEDs from a webpage and an air quality controller. There is a small fee for the kit and we are getting it as low as we can, currently it's around $20.

We will also be playing some Jackbox games and having a social evening as well. 

Are you in Computer Science or another course where you'll be doing some programming? There's a good chance a concerning amount of your group members won't know how to use a version control system like Git to keep code organised, resolve conflicts in code and to be able to roll back in the event of disaster! Don't be the Git of the group, come along and learn basic version control with one of our members on Zoom.

You should also make a free account on https://github.com/ before this event if you don't have one already. Github is a useful site for hosting your Git repositories. 

This week's event will be a casual gaming night on our Minecraft server, with members of both the WiSTEM and Games societies if they want to join in. Make sure to email minecraft@skynet.ie and ask to be whitelisted on the server if you haven't already. See more at games.skynet.ie 

Although not enough material for a full event, there is a guide on how to make simple deepfakes (if you remember the memes from earlier in the year) which members are free to post on our Discord if they manage to come up with something funny. Unofrtunately, they are rather difficult to make if you don't have an Nvidia graphics card, so feel free to ask someone who has one if they would make a particular deepfake for you. 

In this week's event, we are collabing with the WiSTEM2D Society to bring you another gaming event. Both of our societies will be playing Among Us, so join in (Among Us is free on mobile). Even if you don't want to play, you can hop on our Discord and treat this like any of our Virtual Pub events, kick back with a (non-alcoholic) beverage and have a bit of craic with the other members! 

At our Skynet Survival Guide event, society members can setup their own personal websites using WordPress and they will be hosted on our Skynet servers. Hosting is free for society members. The setup is relatively easy, all attendees need is a laptop. WordPress is a free and easy to use website builder that requires no code. And Skynet is the society's own servers located on UL's campus. The default name of each member's website will be skynet.ie/~username but this can be changed if you purchase your own domain. After setting up your website, you will be able to access it at any time and if you need any help a committee member can help you out in our discord channel. You can bring friends along if they would like to setup their own website and they can join the society at the event.

Discussing the movie the Imitation game about Alan Turing. If you have an FYP or just a project you worked on in your spare time then come and show us why it’s great. Games Night

For this event every member participating will need to pay €2 however, if somebody who is a non-member wants to participate they can by paying €5 on the night for membership and they will receive free entry for the event. We will split participants into first years and non-first years. You won’t need anything except for of course a laptop.

This event could give our members a great opportunity to practice their coding in a similar environment to that of exams. We will be asking everybody to arrive at half 6 for sign up to ensure everybody who wants to enter can. Connie our president will be giving a quick demo on how to upload the files you create for judging at 20 to 7 so I am urging everybody to be there before this.

We all ended the event by having a few drinks with Karl in Scholars. This was a really enjoyable event and we hope everybody had fun.

SoUL Week – Tech Fair

So this week it’s all about the societies as we embark on SoUL week. For this year’s SoUL week we have organised a tech fair.

This is where we will be showcasing some of our really cool equipment such as the vive and we will be also showcasing some of the wonders the tech world has to offer such as a bitcoin rig. We will be collaborating with a couple of others societies including WiStem, Astronomy, ULFM and ULRM which will also be showcasing their specialities.

This event will hold a range of different activities for people to try out and see. We are hoping that this event will be a great event for all involved and hopefully there will be something to peak all interests.

Last week’s event was social games. We played get to know you games which everyone got involved in.

We felt like this was a really enjoyable event and we want to thank everyone who attended.

Karl is the Chief Data Scientist for Accucode AI. This week he will be coming to speak to members about his company which is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. He will be talking to us about Artificial Intelligence and some various topics related to working in the industry.
