Posted 25th Feb 2024
Author RORY QUIRKE (Secretary)

Back at it again,

The clubs first Spin this Semester was to a wet and windy Ballyhoura where much pedalling was done and berms turned.

Remember to sign up for next week's spin where we venture north to Killaloe for a very different riding experience.

These trips will run on a Sunday. Events, extra spins and social nights will be posted throughout the semester, so keep an eye on our Instagram and your inbox to make sure you don't miss anything!

Rostrevor Weekend Trip

Posted 21st Nov 2022
Author Anna Fiala (Trips Officer)

Hello hello!

We are just back from a weekend in Rostrevor and although our bodies are sore and tired, we are still buzzing. Hopefully Monday will be kind to us.

On Friday we started the trip with some great music and games on the bus and a bit of a party in the glamping pods where we were staying. On Saturday we spent the day sending Mega Mission, On The Pulse and some cheeky Bins Runs.  We had the whole uplift booked out and the trails all to ourselves! Everyone attempted the tech trail On The Pulse, which was a big step up for a lot of people, well done to everyone! A couple of cased jumps resulted in broken wheels, but thankfully no broken people (except for the broken egos maybe). In the evening a "lift the cereal box with your teeth" game got so competitive we accidentally spent 3 hours stretching, and some flexible individuals got so far that there was no edge on the box left (basically they were trying to lick the bottom of the box off the floor - disgusting). After all the stretching our bodies were sorer than ever, so the Sunday red loop peddling was tough, but we were rewarded with some beautiful views of the Carlingford bay. Except for one descent (where some of our members decided that tumbling down a steep mossy bank is a better strategy than riding it), it felt like we were peddling uphill all day, even though we did more descending then climbing - next time we might try Round Wood for some better trails. We finished the day with the best hot shower of all time at the bike centre and finally headed home. A quick stop in IKEA because Isak was feeling homesick, a quick purchase of some spare tubes in Decathlon and before 10pm we managed to get back to the Boathouse, all sad the trip was over.

Thanks to everyone for coming - what a great trip - great fun and great biking! Some amazing biking progress seen this weekend! Thanks to Jamie for being the bus driver and all our members who were helping to run things smoothly during the trip!

Cannot wait to go again! Until then keep SENDING IT!

Wicklow 2022

What a weekend in Wicklow!

As you may have seen on our socials, UL mountain bike had their first Wicklow trip back since the disruptions of the pandemic. On this weekend, the club travelled early on Saturday morning to Glencullen Adventure Park (GAP) and availed of uplifts for a fantastic day of downhill action. We found the GAP to be an amazing mix of flowing berms, tricky rock gardens, jumps and technical sections through some gorgeous forests overlooking Dublin city and the Irish sea.

On day 2, after staying in a hostel the previous night, the club travelled to Ballinastoe woods, which is located in the heart of the Wicklow mountains. After a steep climb on some weary legs to begin the day, we were rewarded by some really well built trails on descent. These trails overlook the stunning Lough Tay, so we weren't disappointed by the views!

We will be having more weekend trips away in the future, like the Rostrevor weekend, which will be happening in week 11, signups now open on the Wolves website!

TCL Course

Posted 1st Nov 2022
Author Anna Fiala (Trips Officer)

Last weekend 6 of our members have completed the two-day long Trail Cycle Leader (TCL) course. The TCL  is part of the Mountain Bike Leader Awards (MBLA), which was developed to provide a framework and qualification for leaders to deliver mountain biking as a safe and enjoyable activity. The MBLA scheme provides training and assessment in mountain biking, leading and instruction skills. A TCL certification allows you to legally lead groups of 8 people on built trails up to 600m of elevation and 30 minutes walk from a rescue point.

We have got a refresher on a lot of our leading skills and learned a few new ones too. We have practiced how to check bikes, set them up for individual riders, asses the riders fitness and ability, to teach basic skills to beginners and to read maps and navigate from a route card. By providing funding for this course we are hoping to improve the leader skill level within our club and in the mountain biking world! If you have missed out on this great opportunity to educate yourself and become a certified leader don't worry, we will be running another funded TCL course in the future.

The exams take place in 3 months. Wish us luck!

MBUL Annual General Meeting

Posted 26th Sep 2022
Author Marli Serfontein (PRO)

Join us Wednesday week 5 at 8pm after the campus spin for our AGM (Annual General Meeting). You can find out more about the club, give suggestions on how it's run and meet fellow members while feasting over pizza and other goodies!

The main topic that will be covered is electing a new committee. The committee is the back bone of the club. They organise the weekly activities and ensure the bikes are running smoothly. They plan all the amazing trips we go on - from Wicklow to Wales and even the Alps! You get to have a say on whether we camp in a field or stay in a 20 bed chalet, right beside the trails! The committee also helps organise first aid courses, training courses and the fun stuff - pizza nights and nights out.

No small tasks, but there's plenty of support available, and adding a committee position to your CV definitely gives you something to talk about in interviews. All committee hours are also valid for the President's Volunteer Award - another great addition to the CV.

Give it a try! Available committee positions include Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Health and Safety Officer, Equipment Officer and Trips Officer. All pretty self-explanatory, but more info will be on Instagram and in emails leading up to the AGM.
