Last Tuesday the 24th of February, the Environmental Society in collaboration with the Women in STEM Society had the privilege of welcoming Emilie de Loose of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group to tell us about her life as a marine biologist and the struggles she faced as a women in her career.

Emilie (our certified mermaid) started her undergrad in Biology at the university of Ghent in her home country of Belgium. But Biology was not her true passion, it was the sea and all the life that dwelled below. She spent a few years travelling Europe for her education, ending up as a dive instructor in the sun, before eventually returning to STEM, and took a job in Ireland where she could pursue what she truly loved, a scientific understanding of marine life. Though her journey was not easy, facing sexism and discrimination, she ultimately found where she belongs.

It was our pleasure to welcome her and we would love to have her back again.
