TU Dublin 2-1 University of Limerick

The University of Limerick narrowly lost out away to TU Dublin in Blanchardstown this afternoon in their CUFL Premier Division clash.

ULd the game brightly, a throw-in inside the opening minute saw Tom Kelly flick the ball towards the back post where Leon Daly connected seeing his effort go just over the bar.

With eight minutes played Joey Rushe delivered a well weighted ball from a free-kick that caused a scramble in the box. Fintan O’Kelly latched onto the ball dispatching it past the TUD goalkeeper but the linesman raised his flag adjudging an offside.

Momentum in the game swung in the space of a minute as Daly saw a shot blocked by a TU defender from the resulting counter attack a slight moment of hesitation in the UL defence allowed a TU attacker in on goal and he made no mistake to put them ahead with fifteen minutes played.

Despite this setback UL responded well, a booming goal kick from Josh Coady was headed down by Harry Sherlock and a smart pass slipped Daly through on goal.

The mercurial forward took control of the ball and got a shot off towards goal but was denied by a fine save.

The Clare native was involved again on the half hour mark when Alex Cuddy found him out wide, burning his marker for pace he fizzed a ball into the box where Donnacha O’Leary saw a headed effort go just wide.

The hosts hit UL with a sucker punch five minutes before the interval. A TU forward took off skipping past three UL players before getting to the box where he composed himself to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

The Shannonsidersd the second half with real impetus. Once again a long throw-in caused havoc in the TU box with their goalkeeper dropping the ball, it was rushed clear but only as far as Isaac O’Sullivan who hit it on the half volley just going over the bar.

UL’s sustained pressure was rewarded in the sixty third minute when a well weighted ball over the TU defence set O’Leary through on goal.

With his defence beaten the TU keeper had to advance from his line allowing O’Leary to produce a delicate dinked finish to reduce the deficit to one.

As the game wore on UL were causing their hosts problems with advances down the wings, David Holden was getting joy up the left but they couldn’t find the killer final ball.

TUD had their chances too as UL pushed for an equaliser one such effort saw the crossbar rattled while Coady was also called into action to keep his side in the game

The last real chance of note came two minutes from time. Tom Kelly was fouled on the edge of the area giving Joey Rushe an opportunity from the dead ball.

The Aisling Annacotty man got the ball up and over the wall but a diving save from the TU keeper denied him what would have been a fine goal.

UL now have a week off before they head to Cork to take on UCC in their final league clash of the normal season.
