Google is hosting a virtual EMEA International Women’s Day 2023 Series on March 15-16 with a live streamed series of events featuring panels and talks highlighting the accomplishments and forward momentum of women technologists and their allies, and we invite you to join us.

For this series, we will welcome the Women in Tech community across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) to come together. You’ll be able to design your own agenda with topics relevant to your experience and interests, which may include:

  • Navigating your career one door at a time
  • Pros of choosing a career in the STEM field
  • Importance of sponsors and mentors in your development as a professional

AMAZON DISCOVER TECHNOLOGY INSIGHTS

This is a two-day, virtual insight experience and mentoring scheme, for students who are due to graduate in 2025. This is a program for students pursuing computer science (or related) degrees, and who are interested in software or systems development internship opportunities in the Republic of Ireland. The event is primarily for women interested in a career in technology, but is open to all.

This two-day virtual event and subsequent mentoring program aims to develop student employability and software/ systems engineering skills. Student will have opportunities to meet Amazonians, expand their professional network and gain insight into what Software and Systems Development Engineers do on a day-to-day-basis. Students will also have the chance to take part in coding exercises and other technical workshops, gain interview and CV writing skills and watch panel discussion on careers available at Amazon. After the two-day event, participants will be invited to take part in a virtual mentoring program, where students will be given guidance on how to best prepare for applying to our software or systems development engineering internship at Amazon, putting the skills learned during the event into practice. The Ei Electronics Women in Engineering Scholarship will award €2,500 per annum for 3 years to an outstanding University of Limerick female student who is studying one of the following eligible of STEM courses:

  • LM063 BSc in Technology Management
  • LM076 BSc in Product Design & Technology
  • LM118 BE Electronic and Computer Eng.
  • LM121 Computer Science
  • LM124 Mathematics Common Entry
  • LM125 Physics Common Entry
  • LM116  Bachelor of Engineering*
  • LM121 BSc in Cyber Security and IT Forensics
  • LM124/LM125 BSc in Mathematics and Physics

Students must have a QCA ?2.9 in their first semester of 1st year to be eligible to apply. The successful recipient must maintain a QCA ? 2.9 for receipt of the scholarship for the remainder of their studies.

Students will be invited to apply during Spring Semester in their 1st year and a selection of applicants will be invited to a semi-structured interview.

Recipients of the scholarship will complete their Cooperative Education with Ei Electronics and be eligible for Graduate Placement at Ei Electronics Corporate Headquarters in Shannon, Co. Clare.

The “AO Global Engineering Development Programme” is a 20–month structured programme that provides participants the opportunity to be part of a global team, with exposure to cutting edge technology from Additive manufacturing and Robotics, as well as interactions with market leading R&D and marketing teams from across the 9 Stryker divisions. The position rotates on a 5 monthly assignment basis:

Patch is a 6 week long summer accelerator for aspiring future entrepreneurs, scientists, and engineers. Participants spend their time with us:

·  Working on an ambitious project (2020 projects here),

·  Forming life-long connections with an energetic group of peers,

·  Receiving 1:1 mentorship from experts in Stripe, Intercom, and Dogpatch Labs,

·  Learning from founders such as Des Traynor (Intercom), and Celine Halioua (Loyal).

All expenses are paid and bursaries are available to all participants.

Patch summer accelerator

Patch is a summer accelerator for 16-21-year-olds and will take place from July 7th to August 18th this year. It is open to future entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, designers and technologists of all stripes.


Participants spend 6 weeks working on an ambitious project, form life-long connections with an energetic group of peers, receive 1:1 mentorship from experts in Stripe, Intercom, and Dogpatch Labs, and learn from founders such as Des Traynor (Intercom), and Iseult Ward (Foodcloud).

Past projects built at Patch include

·  MIRR - Touchscreen smart mirror

·  Cropsafe - Farm management software using satellite imagery

·  AMSIMP - Open source atmospheric modelling using AI

McAfee Ireland is continuing their Women in Technology Scholarship for the fifth year running. This is for females who are in first year of a STEM course. Through this program McAfee hopes to increase awareness and encourage a new generation of high-achieving women to take up the challenge of a career in Technology.

  • Applications are open until Friday 20th November 2020. Scholarships are open to female school leavers who have entered a specified undergraduate honors degree courses in Technology (full applicable courses is included here)
  • McAfee will award €3,000 per annum for the chosen student.
  • Scholars will complete intern placements or summer internships at the McAfee Cork location (or possibly virtually).
  • To assist with career progression and further education, each scholar will be assigned a McAfee mentor who can assist and provide advice on managing their academic career.

Johnson and Johnson (J&J) WiSTEM2D Programme is open to female students of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design subjects entering their 2nd or 3rd year of studies 2020/2021 within the University of Limerick. J&J have been running the WiSTEM2D Programme in conjunction with UL since 2016, awarding numerous students with mentorship and industrial placement opportunities.

J&J WiSTEM2D Individual Award provides opportunities to network and career mentoring. J&J WiSTEM2D Team Project Grant enables students to contribute to a project that aims to empower women in STEM.

  • J&J WiSTEM2D Individual Award provides a bursary to the value of €2000.
  • J&J WiSTEM2D Team Project Grant provides a grant to the value of €1750.

Apple Summer Internship

Apple’s IS&T department has two upcoming 3 month Machine Learning internship opportunities for Summer 2021. The roles will be based at our Cork offices, and will be paid based on a competitive salary. Candidates must be in their penultimate year of study to be eligible. Upon completion of their internship, high-performing interns will be eligible for full-time offers into Apple's IT Development Program (ITDP). ITDP is a two year rotational training program that offers a completely customizable series of assignments within IS&T. The 2021 Pfizer Ringaskiddy API Graduate Programme is now open for Chemistry and Chemical Engineer Graduates!

About the Graduate Programme

This is an amazing opportunity for Science and Engineering Graduates to progress their career with one of the largest and most successful bio-pharma organisations in the world. A significant number of graduates who have previously completed this graduate programme at the Pfizer Ringaskiddy site have gone on to have very successful careers in Pfizer both at local site and global levels.

During the 2-year programme, participants will be placed in one of various departments (Operations, Value Stream, Automation, New Production Introduction, etc) across the Ringaskiddy site.

The site has a strong coaching culture and a structured mentoring programme is provided. Full training will be provided by a comprehensive induction programme.

During the two-year programme, participants will be involved in the following:

  • One-year induction programme
  • Structured mentoring & coaching – objective setting during each assignment
  • Attend management training programme
  • CPD 6 module professional training programme
  • Attend and present at Senior executive meetings e.g. communications meetings, cross site teams, leadership team meetings
  • Be a key member of a process / project team.
  • Support cost improvement projects for key API manufacture processes
  • Be responsible for the management of various day to day operations across the plants as well as being been assigned to be a coleader of specific projects

Successful Candidates should:

  • Be completing (or just completed) an honours degree (or equivalent / higher) in a Chemical Engineering discipline or a Chemistry/related Industrial Chemistry discipline or a Post Graduate in Organic, Inorganic, Analytical or Physical Chemistry
  • Have excellent inter-personal and communication skills
  • Have a willingness to learn and be challenged

JnJ are currently have open positions for a coop placement in Automation, Process, Manufacturing and Injection Moulding Engineering. They do not have job listings online as this is done internally (through sending your cv to this email address: jdino1@its.jnj.com) and through the university. Please send CVs to this email and they will forward it on Talent Acquisition. Make sure the subject title of the email is J&J Coop Placement - . They require candidates with high QCAs.

 

There are also graduate positions for all the aforementioned engineering departments and a graduate in a manufacturing management degree for a team lead position. This is a dedicated 23-month graduate program commencing September 2020. Like the coop placement, they require candidates with high QCAs.

Mystery Trip!
This Tuesday, the 8th we are bringing you guys on a mystery trip to an undisclosed location in Limerick. We're meeting at 6.15 at the bus stop outside Stables and we'll be back at 8:45. It's going to be a super duper fun event, trust us! This one might be especially good for any first years to come along to and really bond with the older girls in society! #girlsnight

Study Group!
As usual we'll be in SG-18 for this weeks Study Session this Tuesday, teas, coffees and solid advice will be there as usual too. This week is a little different as well, because of the opening of the Johnson and Johnson Scholarship Applications, we'll have committee members on hand to help you fill these out. Past individual and group award winners will be there to help tweak what you have written to give you the best chance at success. Welcome to Week 4
And say hello to our new email layout, we love it! So here's what WiSTEM2D is up to for this week...
Study Group
Our weekly study session is running again this week on Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm in Schumann SG-18. Free tea's and coffee provided as per usual, so feel free to drop in any time to catch up on those lab write ups or tutorial questions! Group study sessions are welcome too so don't feel afraid to bring a few class members along and get your work done together. 
Johnson&Johnson Scholarship Launch Evening
J&J are hosting an event to Launch the their scholarship available to 2nd and 3rd year girls studying STEM subjects. The evening includes free food and drinks, guest speakers from J&J and an interview panel with past award winners from UL. Night Out With the LADieS
  • Give that thinking hat a night off, swap for some dancing shoes, bring that CAN
do attitude and lets go! Finally a night out with the LADieS Fellas listen up, the bus leaves from outside the Scholars at 10pm and then we're heading for Charlie Chaplins (a tasteful cocktail bar, what do you take us for! ? ??) Be at scholars for 9pm if you'd like to get the party started a little early with our committee members! Bring €3 for the bus and more €'s to spend! Event will be posted later so click going!!

Study Group
  • Tuesday we are launching our weekly event which is a study group!
So we have a cosy room in Schumann, SG-18 booked for all our member from 6pm to 9pm every
Tuesday from now until forever (Week 11). Except some tea and biscuits made with love and
nice friendly chats with the gals/guys. First years, this might be particularly helpful if your struggling
with a particular subject because all of us have been there before, and especially with the more
general modules, we'll have done them before. See you guys at the Swot Sesh!

  • Also on Wednesday, Johnson and Johnson will be hosting a drop in centre in the courtyard
from 1-3pm for anyone who wants to find out a bit more on how to apply for J&J's WiSTEM2d 
scholarship  This is available to 2nd and 3rd year girls and I know you guys all love 
cash prizes shhhhh but seriously the mentoring on this programme is second to none, and gives you 
a foot in the door to practically every J&J company in Europe! (Think CoOp people!) Please drop in;
 it s worth your while - you might even see a few society members in there to answer your questions.

Big thank you to Jen from Women in Trades Network Ireland (WITNI) who organised a tour of the Atlantic
Aviation Hangar in Shannon last week, and to our aircraft engineer, Kate who gave a fascinating insight into her job to
society members. Details of more tours like this will be posted on our facebook page in future so keep an eye on
the page!
