In this fast-paced, interactive show, six pre-teen contestants from diverse backgrounds compete for spelling supremacy, all while sharing hilarious and heartwarming stories from their lives.

 We are delighted to once again be taking part in the Musical Theatre Inter-varsity Event.

This year we are joint hosts with the other participating colleges and the event is taking place in the Mullingar Arts Centre. We have a team of 25 people representing ULMTS, and we cannot wait for the weekend to come!

Give Musical Theatre A Go!!

As part of the Give It A Go events here in UL, we are hosting a free taster evening for all of you interested in musical theatre!

Join us on Tuesday the 19th of September at 7pm for a Mean Girls “Revenge Party” Dance Workshop. No experience is required, we just want to have fun and get everyone involved.

This workshop will be led by our very own Cayla O'Neill Ruane & Milly Mason (Intervarsities Dance Captains 2023) 

They will be teaching choreography to "Revenge Party" (created by Cian Mckeon) which won "Best Musical Number" at Intervarsities 2023 !!!

ULMTS will be attending Southeastern Theatre Group's Production of 'Spring Awakening' in Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford.

Love Week is upon us, so it's only fitting we bring back our ever-popular karaoke nights, but this time with a twist! Find yourself a singing partner because we are singing duets from the musicals! No need to organise beforehand, just come on down and see where the night takes you ;) This is also a fundraiser for our society, so the more the merrier!

We're holding our AGM on Tuesday the 14th of September [Week 2] here on our Discord at 7 pm. It will be so nice to see everyone after Summer as we look forward to what will be a much more engaging year for ULMTS! We will also be electing the Committee for the upcoming year.

Stephen Ryan:

"I am delighted to be able to teach the stylish and dazzling choreography from the musical Jersey Boys. I have spent the last three years working with the show in the UK and around the world. Id as swing and eventually played the role of Joe Pesci. We will start with an easy warm up to get the body ready and then get straight into the choreography for the finale “Who Loves You”. Transport yourselves back in time to the era of the doo-wop, close harmony groups and eye catching moves from Tony award winning choreographer Sergio Trujillo. I will be looking at detail within the movement and teaching both male and female variations. Girls imagine heels and boys imagine suit jackets. If we have time I will teach a 90s hip hop number from the show too which is explosive and energetic. Two very different but fun dance routines."

• Killian Donnelly will soon play the title role in The Phantom Of The Opera in London’s West End later this year.
• Prior to this, he played the role on Jean Valjean in the International Tour of Les Misérables as well as the West End production of the show.
• He played the role of Charlie Price in Kinky Boots on Broadway, a role he originated at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End in 2015, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award.
• His other theatre credits include Huey in the original London cast of Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre for which he was also nominated for an Olivier Award, and Jackie in Frank McGuinness' Donegal at Dublin's Abbey Theatre.
• He created the role of Deco in The Commitments at the Palace Theatre and has also played Tony in Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre as well as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre.
• He first joined the company of Les Misérables in 2008, going on to play the role of Enjolras from 2009 to 2011. In 2010, he played the role of Courfeyrac in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Misérables at The O2 Arena and also played the role of Combeferre in the multi-award-winning film of the show, released in 2012.
  

Acting through song sessions (Paige Peddie):

"I'll be working with individuals on acting through song techniques and exercises to get the best out of their chosen musical theatre song.

We will work on techniques such as: Character analysis, Characters objectives, The emotional ark/journey of a song Language in the song and Music cues amongst others.

Lesson format: For 2 hours, I will work with 6 students on their chosen song (20 minutes each). The rest of the students will be asked to watch, make notes, give feedback, discuss & think about each individuals performance and we will all work together to uplift the person and make their performance the best it can be."

If you wish to watch the other performers and take some valuable notes based on their performance, and just support the performers, you can attend the workshop for free.

As well as threading the boards on London and Dublin stages, Brian has been a qualified voice teacher since 2020 upon receiving his accreditation from
Voice College London through Ria Keen, and training with The Royal Irish Academy of Music over a 4 year period between 2010 and 2013 under the tutorage of Mary Brennan, Deborah Kelleher and Mairead Hurley. Brian’s workshop will concentrate on the significance of productive vocal techniques in singing approaches geared towards being a high standard Musical Theatre/Contemporary Singer, and will also cover a range of technical and musical objectives singers can set out to achieve to develop an understanding of their instrument and how it can be used to its best.

Simon Trinder - actor/practitioner

I specialise in two specific areas of teaching. Firstly, the Stanislavski based approach of my mentor, the director; Mike Alfreds. This approach, laid out in his book Different Every Night, uses actions and objectives in a super simple and practical way to create immediate connection and true freedom in the actor. It is a quickly taught and repeatable approach to any text or medium. I have utilised this approach in my own career over 20 years working with Shakespeare (RSC, Globe), on television and film regularly and in commercial musical theatre (Disney's The Lion King and the RSC's Merry Wives; The Musical). I have a set 2 hr session on this that I have been using for several months.

In this session, we teach people what an action is, how to play one and apply it to text as well as how to phrase, frame and apply an objective so it ACTUALLY brings life to the scene and makes the actor 'think like the character'. It is physical, energised and hugely informative.

Sherry is currently the Dance Captain and Swing of The Lion King UK & Ireland Tour. Sherry was also Dance Captain in The Lion King, Netherlands. She has taught company classes for T.H.E and The Lion King, and was a ballet instructor at Lasalle College of the Arts. Sherry is also a Stotts Pilates instructor.

Dance Workshop - The Lion King My workshop usually starts with a comprehensive version of the warm up that I typically give the cast members of The Lion King - this includes various dance techniques and body conditioning exercises that I find useful for performing the show. I will then teach the choreography from the show such as Lioness Hunt (ladies), Kick Butt (men) and if we have time I can also teach a small bit of He Lives in You. Details, nuances and performance quality will be emphasized so that students will not just know the steps, but also get a taste of performing the number.
