IT'S HERE! The event you've been waiting for: the competitive UL bioblitz! We've been planning it all year, and it promises to be an action-packed day. Trinity and TU Dublin will arrive at 11 a.m. There will be a workshop at 11.30 a.m. on the basics of surveying and on-campus health and safety, followed by lunch at Stables at 1 p.m. The bioblitz begins at 2 p.m. and goes on until half-past four. We will convene in Scholars at 6 p.m. for supper, the announcement of the winners, and the prize-giving! Come along for biodiversity, friendship, and fun!

The esteemed ecologist Pádraig Fogarty will be joining EnviroSoc on Monday the 15th of April to talk about his work and environmental activism at 6 p.m. in KBG-13. Refreshments will be provided. Come along for what promises to be an evening of stimulating discussion on all things biodiversity!

We are meeting in KBG-13 at 6 pm with Liz Gabbett to discuss the upcoming bioblitz! We will be signing people up for roles on the day, such as guiding attendees to their habitats and partaking in the bioblitz on the UL team. See you there!

On Tuesday the 27th of February,  the EU passed a key piece of Green Deal legislation into law. The Nature Restoration Law mandates the restoration of up to 90% of ecosystems across the bloc. The law has been beset by controversy, much of it manufactured by the EPP, which announced that it would not vote for the law shortly before the plenary, despite negotiating its contents for six months. Remarkably, almost all the Irish MEPs voted to pass this vital law. 

To discuss this happy development, and to follow on from our meeting with MEP Grace O'Sullivan last semester, EnviroSoc will be holding a roundtable with a couple of the political societies. Refreshments and drinks will be provided.

EnviroSoc is going to Dublin! On the Saturday of Week 1, 3rd February, we'll be taking a start-of-semester trip to Phoenix Park. We will be taking the 8.55 a.m. train to Heuston from Colbert Station and returning at around 7 p.m. You must book your own train tickets for this trip: 08:55 outbound to Heuston, 16:25 return to Colbert. Tickets can be booked at irishrail.ie. When booking on Wolves, please indicate if you have booked a ticket. We will reimburse all ticket costs after the trip. It will be a very cold day on Saturday, so dress warmly, and bring sensible footwear. See you then!

We will be having a quiz night, with pizza to follow, on Monday of Week 1! It'll be a great way to ease into the new semester. Come along, compete, have fun, and enjoy a delicious pizza supper!

EnviroSoc will be sitting down to a potluck with a difference on the Monday of Week 13! To celebrate the end of a successful semester, we will be having a make-your-own-fajita dinner in Red Raisins at 6 p.m. Everyone can bring something different to the table! We will need the following:

- Tortillas

- Basic fillings: lettuce, rice, onion, peppers, sweetcorn, cheese

- Fancy fillings: spiced meat (shredded chicken/pork/beef), jalapeños, refried beans, guacamole, sour cream

- Drinks (water, soft drinks)

- A tablecloth

- Paper plates and cups

- Desserts

Come along to KBG-10 (different room than usual!) and learn how to mend your own clothes. Sewing experience not required, materials will be provided. We'll teach you how to hem, patch and darn, as well as reinforcing fading fabric and answer any questions you have on how to care for your clothes.

Note: book for this event via either UL Crafts or UL Environmental, not both. If you miss out this time, don't worry! We'll be running the event again in semester two.

Welcome to Enviro Soc! Every Monday, we get together to talk about important issues facing our planet and what we as students can do to tackle them - as well as to chat and have fun! 

This week, we're in the Schumann Building making clay animals. This not only raises awareness of important organisms in our ecosystem (did you know otters are endangered?) but, critically, will be super fun. Come along!

A meeting for students on climate change will be held in UL on Monday with Brian Leddin TD. 
The meeting is open to all students and can be attended by members of the Environmental Society and other societies.

We will be hosting the Climate Caravan on campus from 4 O' Clock on the 20th of April meeting at Brown Thomas for the Caravans trip across campus. Afterwards they will be speaking in the Room 3 of the Student Centre.

Just a heads up that this week we will not be holding our traditional Monday night event and instead will be going to visit the UL Rooftop garden on Thursday (10th of March)! 

We will be meeting at Brown Thomas in the main plaza at 12:55 pm on Thursday and we will head into the main building to visit the garden. This is the first of two garden visits we will complete as a society!

We are going to be setting up a thrift shop in the courtyard.

You will be able to buy whatever stock we have available or barter for clothes, without the exchange of any monies.

The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of sustainable fashion, and how easy it is to buy clothes without any damage to our environment.

Any stock left over will go towards helping us run a catwalk in the next semester.

Hello All!

We will be setting up a clothes collection point on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 16:30, for any students who wish to get rid of any unwanted clothes, and free up some space.

The aim is to run a Thrift and Barter Shop the week after to promote sustainable fashion as well as raise funds for the society.

You will be able to buy second-hand clothes or barter/swap for any clothes they see and like in Week 9.

Join Liz Gabbett of the Maigue River Trust o the 18th of October 2021 in KBS-013 to learn more about our rivers and how we can protect them! Come and discover about the macroinvertebrates that tell us how healthy a river is. 

Our Semi-Annual Pizza night will take place Thursday the 7th of October at 7 pm, with a capacity of 30 members.

We will be running a recycling awareness competition called the "12 days of Christmas" where we raise awareness of what you can and cannot recycle, ending with an online quiz, open to everyone who is following one of our social medias. The quiz will be 12 questions related to recycling or disposing of waste properly. There will be 3 winners chosen at random from the people who answered all questions correctly. Prizes are a refurbished ipad and two Christmas hampers.

We will all be logging into to have a night of carving pumpkins and just having a bit of fun chatting. Hope to see you there!

We will attend the first ever Green campus online webinar which is run by An Taisce. The speakers are Carina Mutschele from UN Environment Programme will introduce the recently published Little Book of Green Nudges. https://www.unenvironment.org/resources/publication/little-book-green-nudges This is a book on how to nedge people/groups/organisations to enact green initiatives. Next, Samantha Fahy from Dublin City University will present on Carbon Footprinting taking place in Dublin City University. To conclude, Dermot O’Donovan from GMIT Letterfrack will present on Trees fighting climate change - revaluing our natural resources.

We will be watching the latest documentary from Sir David Attenborough on Netflix using the google chrome extension Netflix party. We will have a short discussion about it afterwards. I'll post the link closer to the time. See you then!

Please join the Environmental Society once again on the 29th of November for the Fridays For Future march! We will be meeting in the student life courtyard at 11:30 and then leave at the UL bus stop at 12:15 so that we can be in the city center for 1:00!

The Environmental Society will be going on a trip to visit a eco-friendly village which is located in Cloughjordan in Ireland.

You know that pair of jeans you love but never wear because they ripped at the seams? Or that shirt with the funny print that got a little hole in it? Don't toss them away! Bring them to us at the repair café next Tuesday and we'll try to save your clothes! Or if you have a pile of clothes that you never wear, why not donate them? Just bring them to us and we'll handle the rest!

Have you missed the last couple of protests? Well, now there's another chance! This time there will be a protest this Saturday as part of extinction rebellion week. Hope to see you there!

Hi all! We will be meeting at the bus stop in front of Stables this Saturday at 1:00! This is to protest against the EPA's decision to allow the burning of waste into our air! We hope that ye will come and support our non-support of this horrible disicion. We cannot allow this to happen!

To celebrate the start of Fall/The Halloween Season/The beginning of October the Environmental Society will be having a bake sale on the 1st of October from 9:00am to 6:00pm. We hope to see you there! (Vegan options will be available)

We're going on a bike ride, rain or shine, to see the nature and other sites that Limerick has to offer in order to showcase show the biodiversity that Limerick has to offer.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in last week's march! The Environmental Society will also be participating in this Friday For Future march as well! It will be the last one that we will be doing for awhile. It definitely won't be the last one so keep out on the lookout for when we do the next one!
