Recently we organised a Tree Blitz on campus with the simple goal - record as many species of tree's on campus as possible! Why? Because UL needs 100 different species of trees to apply for Arboretum status, a prestigious award and one that will further improve the green status of our college campus. 15 members showed up for what was a beautiful evening and we ended up recording just over 90 species of trees in three hours!!!! This was a remarkable and unexpected result and we still haven't surveyed the North Campus! A massive well done to everyone that took part.

This Wednesday we teamed up with the crew at Smarter Travel UL to lead a walk for the 'Walktober' event they are running on campus. Our president James led the walk and we had a great time showing off some native trees, birds and even some cool mushrooms! We hope to continue these walks on our own throughout the semester and continue to observe and appreciate the beautiful nature we have here on campus.

What an incredible energy at our Annual General Meeting last week! We are absolutely thrilled with the turnout and want to extend a huge welcome to all our new members. Your enthusiasm is clear to see, and we can't wait to make a real difference with you, both on campus and in the wider community.
To our returning members, thank you for your continued dedication to the society. Your commitment is the backbone of our success, and we're so excited to have you rejoin us as we welcome a new wave of passionate individuals.
We're so glad you're here. Let's make this year our most impactful one yet!

As I sign off as EnviroSoc president, I would like to look back at my tenure and marvel at what the Society has achieved. We have had important figures in Irish environmentalism, such as Padraic Fogarty, Grace O'Sullivan, and Dr Áine Lynch as guest speakers. With Liz Gabbett and Yvonne Ryan's help, we were able to organise our incredibly popular Bioblitz in 2024! We have also been on adventures to Galway Atlantaquaria and Phoenix Park, gone kayaking on the River Shannon, conducted litterpicks, grown acorns from seed, and enjoyed plenty of pizza and David Attenborough documentaries!
In addition, we were delighted this past April when EnviroSoc member James Organ won first place in the UL Sustainability Challenge. Well done also to his fellow society member, Karl Gilmartin, who was a runner-up in the competition.
The last two years have been challenging, but we've all had a lot of fun and learned a ton of new skills. Thank you so much for having me as your chairperson. I would also like to thank the committee and ordinary members, without whom none of this could have been achieved. I wish the society every success in the coming academic year.
Signing off,
Rachel Beck.

Big News!!
Over the next fortnight - UL Environmental Society will be promoting sustainable fashion on campus.
Wednesday and Thursday of Week 8 we will be collecting any unwanted clothes, in the courtyard, you have in your wardrobes and drawers - to help you clean up any clutter you have.
Tuesday to Thursday of week 9 we will be hosting a Thrift Shop in the same location where students can swap clothes for what we have on the table or buy them and help raise funds for the society.
We hope to see you there!

Putting and doing something positive into the universe is better than doing nothing. Even if you aren't the biggest climate activist, simply showing up for the march, voting for people that want to make positive real changes in the name of humanity and not in the name of money, or whatever else. Actions speak louder than words, but even the most simple humbling actions can make the difference. Even if others are being judgmental, remember, they cannot see what is in your heart and you yourself know that you're not simply showing off or going into a room to do nothing meaningful. You are the future, you are our hope, and you are what we need. Why? Because the fate of the planet is at stake, and I want to keep seeing many more friendships bloom, people still being able to have families, and people still being able to find that special someone for many years to come.
