Wednesday 16th of October we will be having a student driven Co-op/internship discussion. The meeting will take place in KBG15 at 6:30pm. We have four panelists, each having different internship experiences in different countries.

This is a good opportunity for our 1st and 2nd year members to get an idea of what to expect and should help them make a more informed decision. It will also be a good opportunity for members who have already been on Co-op to better understand their experiences and to share, compare, and contrast experiences.

Fior Jewellery and Whack Vintage owners, who just recently had a successful pop up shop together in the Crescent Shopping Centre, will be joining us to talk about their businesses. Fior is a bespoke Irish Jewellery brand and Whack Vintage is a Vintage Clothing store. We will learn from their example of Entrepreneurship and how they developed their business. Both of the owners are former UL Alumni. The lads will be showcasing some merch at the event and there will be time for a Q&A.

We will show you that the same thing is being asked across most competitions and that it doesn't require nearly as much work as an essay, or writing this announcement.

Michele o’ Dwyer is running a practical idea generation session with us in KBG16 to follow on from our ‘pitching yourself’ session with Ben Kiely past week

Weekly Wednesday meeting from 6:30pm in KB114 with Cian O'Donnell from Accenture coming to discuss his career as a consultant, what consultants do and offer to companies and how to make yourself stand out from the rest of the pack, followed by Ben Kiely giving a presentation on how to pitch yourself.

Intro/pizza night for all members of ULCES to meet and get to know each other and the committee members at the start of the year

Applications are now open for the Summer 2022 Student Inc.

You will get paid €4,000 and get mentoring support throughout the summer. You will also be able to avail of workspace and supports from Nexus Innovation Centre on the UL Campus (providing government restrictions don't change). 

Students must be available for the full duration of the programme (no holidays planned or more than 1 repeat/ deferred exam).
Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place week beginning 18th April 2022. Student Inc. is Ireland’s longest run student accelerator programme and will run this year from May 30th to 26th August. The programme will run across MTU, UCC, UL, TUS and ATU and will be supported by the incubation centres on each of the university campuses.

I would like to draw your attention to the Student Inc programme - supporting and mentoring student entrepreneurs to turn ideas into business opportunities .

This initiative is to encourage student entrepreneurs to assess the feasibility of their business ideas and start a business through providing students with seed funding and access to a network of entrepreneurs, trainers, mentors and investors. The programme is run through the Nexus Innovation Centre in UL and the Kemmy Business Schoolng at the end of June and running to the end of August,  so it does not interfere with your study time.

The programme is open to all students regardless of their year of study or academic discipline can apply for a place on the programme.

EntreSTEM – merging Entrepreneurial thinking to STEM to solve real-world problems workshop

Overview

Career paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines are increasingly entrepreneurial whether a new enterprise or intrapreneurial which is developing new ideas, products, services and processes in existing organizations.  Furthermore, it is likely that the engineering and science students of today are preparing for jobs that do not currently exist and thus need to be able to flexible and adaptable to work in areas beyond their core discipline expertise.  Despite these trends STEM curricula do not regularly include a grounding in entrepreneurship with an emphasis on innovation and invention to prepare for the 21st century workforce.

Adding an entrepreneurial mindset, a way of thinking and innovation tools in STEM contexts are proven to increase student awareness of broader career opportunities in STEM plus developing future work skills such as creative thinking, problem solving, flexibility, resilience, a growth mindset and the ability to manage risk and uncertainty. Merging the best of both STEM and Entrepreneurship will provide STEM graduates with a key competitive advantage in the workplace of the future

I am delighted to announce that Orla Foley will be joining us next Monday the 15th at 6:30pm. Orla has a whole range of qualifications from studying Pyschology in UL, to Physiotherapy and other muscle healing therapies in LIT & London, and she is an entrepreneur. She opened her own business in Killaloe, Co. Clare in 2001 focusing on helping people with pain and injuries but has learned to pivot her business model to include complimentary therapies, services, and add-ons to add durability to her business offerings.

She will be speaking to us about 3 main topics. 

1. Entrepreneurship and starting a business in niche markets

2. Positive Pyschology & Mental Reframing (See a note under this message to learn what it means) 

3. Her national fundraiser for CRY Ireland, the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation, and CARI Foundation which has been extremely successful and is making huge strides in awareness for these charities.

Su Carty is an entrepreneur, business coach, World Rugby Council Member, Former IRFU player & referee, and director of Ohana Zero Suicide Alliance.

Su will be talking to us about Team Dynamics, Leadership, Mental Health, and Tips for being an Entrepreneur. This talk, like the 1st session last semester is completely free to anyone - member or not. So please feel free to share the event with absolutely everyone, because it's going to a cracker!

ULES are collaborating with Enactus, Student Life, and others to launch a brand new concept to the University of Limerick. If you want to develop your mindset to think more creatively and critically, then come down to us where we will have a series of infoshops, coffee mornings, and society meetings - all with the view of re-defining what Entrepreneurship is. We are NOT a business society and we want as many people to come and learn more about how Entrepreneurship is already in their daily lives; we just want to help you take the opportunity and develop it to its maximum.

Brian Shee will share his views on Entrepreneurship in our Entrepreneurship hub in the Student Courtyard. All are welcome to hear how Entrepreneurship will be a key graduate outcome in the very near future. 

Last chance to sign up for the Intel trip. We will be leaving KBS at 12:45 on November 7th. 8 guest speakers, tour of their facility, and advice session are all part of the trip. Cost is €5. Trip is for members only. 

We will have a guest speaker from a local student start-up. We will also have our official sign-up to the Intel trip. Our infoshop will be focused on the differences between emotions and mindset, and how mindsets can be directly applied into everyday life.

This week is going to be an interactive infoshop where we discuss how to create a passion-based idea for a business. We are going to go through methods for idea generation that many people don't know about and test them out on a group project. We will, as per usual, integrate some inspiring research like TED videos and podcasts, so that you will get different perspectives on what it is to be an innovator. This is NOT a business society, so please swing by and have some fun with us! Can't wait to see you there.
