Leia Wilmont, R&D Graduate at Nestle Development Centre based in Askeaton, Co. Limerick will be joining WiSTEM2D on the 21/03/2023 to talk about the graduate programmes in NDC as well as co-op advice and industry tips for women interested in a STEM career.

This event will be a fireside chat and it will take place in UL (Tierney building T3-013) on the 20th of March from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The event will be chaired by Prof Martin Hayes. Cinzia is a doctor in microelectronics by training and a multi-passionate creative by nature.

Cinzia completed a B.S. and an M.Sc in Electronic Engineering from the University of Roma Tor Vergata. She has worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich. She earned her PhD in Microelectronics from Delft University of Technology. She has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Delft University of Technology. Her research focused on experiments on nanomaterials and silicon microfabrication and the resulting applications in biotechnology, sensing, and novel cooling strategies in smartphones.

With her technical background, she saw the potential of microelectronics into the pioneering biological field of the Organ-on-chips.

Cinzia is co-founder and CEO of the start-up BIOND Solutions B.V. – a Dutch biotech company with the aim to disrupt the in vitro drug development in the pharmaceutical industry and to enable the road toward personalized disease treatment.

Furkan Karayel is an award-winning inclusive leadership advisor and CEO of Diversein.com. She helps leaders to recognize and practice inclusion in the workplace. Her passion is leveraging women-in-tech leadership, diversity, and empowering female founders globally. She previously worked with companies such as HubSpot, Microsoft, Indeed.com, VMWare, and Verizon Media. Furkan founded Diversein.com after 10 years of software engineering experience in multinational tech companies in Ireland. She has been honored with the "Diversity and Inclusion Role Model in Business" and "Trailblazer" Awards. Additionally, Furkan is an active speaker at international events where she shares her learnings about experiences of the tech world as a woman, her recommendations for inclusive leadership, and the power of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Happy maths week! You may be thinking 'What does maths have to do with space?'. Well, maths is fundamental to most of the branches of science and especially physics. Astronauts are required to have a Bachelor's degree in at least one of engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics (on top of years of professional piloting experience!). Our society is celebrating maths without any mindboggling problem-solving or dizzying equations this week. Come chill out with us by watching a film and getting to know a few members of the society.

The movie to be shown is Mercury 13, an inspiring documentary on 13 amazing women who were denied the opportunity to become astronauts in the 60s. The movie will be a great way to chill out near the end of the week 3, especially as the work starts piling up. Keep an eye out on this page for a zoom link to be posted.

On Tuesday 18th Wistem members will be paying a site visit to Regeneron, a biopharmaceutical company. Regeneron's R&D teams have already begun research associated with the new corona virus, and have also had recent success against other deadly pathogens such as Ebola. This site visit will be a great opportunity for our members to experience modern drug manufacturing processes in world-class facilities. A sign sheet will be availble on Tuesday 11th for anyone interested in attending.

There are many positions open on committee so come down and nominate yourself or someone you think would be suited for the job. Being involved on committee looks great on a CV and you will help to empower women in STEM and make UL a great environment for all people studying STEM subject.
