Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on this Thursday the 11th in KBG-12 at 19:30.

All committee positions are up for grabs! So if you want to get more involved with the club, or have your say on next year's committee, make sure to come along :)

On  Thursday April 4th, we will be hosting a games night event in collaboration with UL’s African Caribbean  Society in aid of Sickle Cell Ireland!

The event begins at 6.30pm in Kilmurry Village Hall and is expected to run till 8.30pm.

Entry fee of €5 will cover the evening ! Please pay on the day at Kilmurry Hall, cash is preferred.

We will have a bunch of games to play and refreshments will be provided:)))  

So! If you’re free and feeling like a fun and social night! Bring some friends or make friends there whilst playing some fun board games and card games. 

Not only will you have a great evening! But you will also be helping a great charity. 

All event profits will be donated to Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Ireland.

This weekend we are running a 'Learn to Lead' session with Brian Bateson in the Burren. As this course is a transitional course from indoor leading/outdoor seconding, the participants will need to have done some lead climbing indoors.

The main skills covered or reinforced throughout the course are:

• Gear placement – how to rate it and when to trust it
• Anchors – build bomb-proof in reach and out of reach anchors
• Belays – efficiently and safely belay your leader/second
• Movement skills – how to climb better and smarter
• Rest/efficiency – finding restful positions whilst placing gear
• Communication- climbing calls and etiquette
• Use of the guide book
• Abseiling

We are running outdoor climbing and rope work training over two days in The Burren. This workshop will be run by two experienced rock climbing instructors and will be a great chance to become more well acquainted with the necessary skills for roped rock climbing. 

The meeting point is the White Gates carpark on campus. We will meet at 8am.

The price for training is 60 euros (this covers both days).

The club will provide gear over the weekend, including personal gear if needed.

Our annual Brandon trip is on this weekend and promises to be a great time - with amazing people, great hiking, and lots of craic!

We will be leaving from the East Gate Carpark at 18:30 on Friday the 1st of March. We will be stopping to pick up food for that evening and for the hike the next day on our way up. Breakfast will be provided on Saturday and Sunday morning and dinner will be provided on Saturday evening. But be sure to remember to bring your lunch for the hike though!

On Saturday we will be waking up bright and early to go hiking. After the hike, we'll head back to the hostel to for a hot shower, some dinner and some craic!

After breakfast on Sunday we'll go for a quick stroll on the beach before making our way back to Limerick.

OPC are having a 30th Reunion on Saturday 21^st of Oct 2023 in the Radisson Blu Hotel - only 3 Weeks away now!

This is a great opportunity to meet up with old friends, make new ones, regale one another with great memories and have the craic! OPC are hosting a social movie night this Thursday, the 12th, at 7pm! The movie night will be held in the Schumann Building, in room S205. 

There will be some snacks provided, but feel free to bring your own as well.

The first big overnight trip of the year will be taking place from the 6-8th of October in Letterfrack Co. Galway. It will be an absolutely amazing time - with gorgeous hikes at Garraun and Diamond Hill, great food, and even better people. 

Trip cost is €50 and this covers transportation, accommodation and food at the hostel (but remember to bring lunch/snacks for the hike on Saturday). Everyone is welcome so make sign to sign up! It will be an absolutely epic weekend!!

Our first info night of the year will be held at 7pm on Thursday the 28th of September in KBG-12!

Info nights are a great opportunity to learn what will be going on in the club throughout the semester and meet other members. We will go through information about everything our club has to offer, from weekly activities and trips to events and training - we'll run through how best to get involved in our club.

The 2023 Summer trip to the Chamonix, in the French Alps is fast approaching! This trip is always class with the campsite so close to the beautiful town of Chamonix and right at base the impressive French Alps.

It promises good times, great views and even better climbing and mountaineering!

The Camino is a network of medieval paths across parts of Europe that all lead to the city of Santiago De Compostela. It has attracted countless walkers and pilgrims for over a thousand years.

The OPC Camino trip is taking place from the 27th of May to the 5th of June. There will be 8 days of walking, from Braga to Santiago De Compostela. This is our first Camino trip as a club and should be amazing experience and unforgettable experience!

On Saturday, 2oth, we will be doing an outdoor training day in preparation for our Summer Alps trip. This trip will be to Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry.

We will be going up Howling Ridge, one of Ireland’s classic multi-pitch mountaineering routes. This is a steep ridge which cuts up the north-east face of Carrauntoohil. It is graded V. Diff in summer and goes at various grades in winter, depending on conditions.

This will be a great trip for learning, or brushing up on, rope skills and a good day to test yourself before heading out to France. If you are going on our Alps trip make sure to try and come along as this will be one of only two of our remaining outdoor training sessions before France. You will have to attend at least one of these days.

We'll be hosting an indoor training session on Saturday, the 13th, in the UL climbing wall for our members who are going on our Alps Summer trip.

This session will include an info session which will cover a few more details around the trip, equipment/skills needed, etc. and will also include some training (lead climbing, rope skills, etc.)

All you need to bring is your climbing gear and some psyche :)

Our 2023 AGM is on this Wednesday, the 12th, at 19:30 in KBG-12.

During the AGM next year's committee will be voted in - ALL committee positions will be up for grabs! Any member can attend, be nominated, or nominate themselves or others for a position. Even if you're not interested in a committee position, it's still a great chance to have your say in the club's future and learn more about upcoming trips, plans for next year, etc.!

There'll be a social night in Scholar's afterwards too, with food and drink, for everyone to catch up and have some fun!

Our famous Glendalough trip is back this Paddy's weekend! This trip is always a great time - with amazing people, great hiking and climbing, and lots of craic!

We will be leaving from the East Gate Carpark at 18:30 on Friday the 17th of March. We will be stopping to pick up food for that evening and for the hike the next day on our way up.

On Saturday we will be waking up bright and early to go hiking in the lovely Glendalough valley, this is a lovely area with great views and a rich history. There will also be a small bouldering group for some of our more experienced climbers to explore the local rock. Food will be provided on Saturday evening. After dinner we will be having a ball, so bring your best fits!

We will provide breakfast on Sunday morning before heading for a quick dip in one of the valley's lakes, so bring towels etc. After this we'll make our way back to Limerick.

Orienteering Intervarsities taking place in Fauna woods Co.Wicklow. Information Via email has been sent to all members and a group chat that all participants agreed to has been created to communicate all safety and logistical information.  

To celebrate International Women's Day we are holding women's only climbing session on Wednesday the 8th. It will be a beginner friendly session. Gear will be provided at the wall and there will be supervisors on hand to coach.  

This trip is for more experienced members to learn or refresh some trad climbing skills - such as placing gear and building anchors.

We will be leaving UL at 9.30am sharp and are hoping to arrive back on campus for around 5pm.

The trip will cost 10 euros. 

Bring lunch and rain gear as well as your climbing gear.

This years Irish climbing intervarsity will be taking place in Belfast between two climbing gyms - Ozone and Boulderworld.

The competition is split into two days, with bouldering on the first day and roped climbing on the second. The first day of competition will begin on the 18th in Boulderworld Belfast, with two sessions (morning and afternoon) being ran. UL will be competing in the afternoon slot which begins at 1pm. The second day of competition will be held in Ozone, UL will be competing in the morning session beginning at 10am.

There will also be a speech from Iain Miller in the MBC lecture theatre on the evening of the 17th, from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Hey Everyone! We hope you can all make it to this year's E.G.M.! This will be a meeting to give you all some information about our club, the people who run it and what to expect this semester. We will also be answering any questions you might have and we will be electing four new committee positions: Women's Officer, Events Officer, Assistant P.R.O. and Assistant Treasurer! There will also be a social night on afterwards.

We will be leaving at 6pm Friday the 11th of November and staying in the hostel for two nights. The hike on Mount Brandon will be on Saturday morning. On Sunday we will head down to the beach for some games and a swim so bring towels etc. We'll be leaving around noon on Sunday. 

Although we are a bit late for Halloween, there will be dress up on the Saturday night so make sure to bring a costume (punishment for those who don't dress up!). We'll have drinks in the hostel, then pop down to the local pub for some craic and music!

The cost for the whole weekend will be 50 euros. This includes the bus, hostel, dinner on Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday. We will be collecting payment next week.

What you will need!

• Runners are fine for this hike however, it is strongly recommended you wear hiking boots with ankle supports. Details on where to purchase hiking boots can be found below cos we're sound ;)

• Warm Clothes (layer up e.g. with fleeces) it will be early morning!

• Waterproof Raincoat (waterproof pants also recommended)

• Hats & Gloves

• Head torches or flash lights, phone lights wont be strong enough!

Coumshingaun is a super fun hike with some steep inclines, uneven ground and a small bit of scrambling involved, but really beautiful views from the top of the lake and countryside!

Kerry to hike Torc Mountain, this hike is a short, relatively easy hike of about 2.5 hours mainly boardwalk and steps. If you don't have hiking boots for this hike, a good pair of runners will do at a stretch, but for all future hikes hiking boots (with ankle support) will be required. They can be purchased in a range of stores across Limerick including Radar Stores, Regatta, Mountain Warehouse and on occasion TK Maxx. Mountain Skills Day 2. navigation and general hiking skills for future mountain leaders. Takes place in the galtee mountains.

Mountain Skills Training for members of the club for the purpose of training hike leaders for the club.

Tuesday's climbing session is going to be a little different next week! Join us on Tuesday Nov. 16th 7:30 - 9:30 at the UL wall for our Diversity Night! This is to celebrate people of all backgrounds coming together through climbing! We want to encourage and empower everyone to enjoy the outdoors in our club and this night is focused on celebrating this.

To celebrate diversity in the club we encourage you all to pick a colour of the rainbow and to dress up in as much of that colour as possible on the night, thus creating a rainbow- the symbol for diversity!

Mark your calendars for April 9th, (and not just for the rerelease of Fearless(taylor’s version)) because we are getting closer to our 24 hour OPC Challenge event! This challenge is in aid of supporting Irish Community Rapid Response and aims to be the weirdest and wildest 24 hours of the year. We will be asking everyone to take part in an hour of activity - the stranger the better - over course of the 24 hour periodng from midday of Friday 9th of April to midday on Saturday 10th April. Wait for the sun to go down, get up at the crack of dawn or just go whenever you feel like it, and spend an hour out and about within your 5km. Check out our stories for examples of activities you can try during the challenge!!

On Friday the 5th of March at 8pm Hazel Findlay is delivering a talk to all the University climbing clubs across Ireland! We have free tickets for this event for all our lovely members (that’s you!) Well guys! Queen’s University Belfast Caving Club is hosting a talk this evening (Wednesday 10th February 2021) at 7pm and you are all welcome to join. 

Paul McCarron, President of QUCC will be giving a talk about “Where Caving can Take you”

Highlights include him talking about moving from having zero experience with caving (there are holes in the ground?!?), moving to joining in on long trips in Ireland and then joining an expedition to find previously unexplored cave passage in Europe on an Expedition!!

Following this, Conor Winchcombe, previous Captain of the club and now current President of the Speleological Union of Ireland will also join.

Highlights include some of his more interesting caving stories in addition to what the SUI do.

Join us this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. as we will be hearing from former OPC members Aoife Coleman and Siobhán O' Donovan who climbed Mount Everest Base Camp. The girls will be giving a talk about their own experience in the club and how they independently trekked their way to Everest Base Camp in November of last year! They'll also answer any of of your burning questions at the end. This is not one to miss!

This Thursday at 8 p.m. on Zoom, we will be joined by special guest Culann O'Brien as he discusses his climbing journey from his humble beginnings here at the OPC, to the crazy heights he's reaching today. Culann is a former OPC member who, in first year, took to climbing like a duck to water. Since then, he has gone on to do some amazing stuff and is currently living in Scotland, climbing some savage routes and working as a filmmaker in the climbing community.

?This Thursday at 7 p.m., we are holding a virtual talk where we will be joined by our guest speaker, Tomás Walsh. Tomás is a former OPC member who has been involved with South Eastern Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) for the past number of years. SEMRA is a truly incredible group of volunteers who are crucial to all who take on the mountains. Tomás will be discussing what is involved in the job of a mountain rescuer, the different rescue situations he's been involved in, what you should do if ever in trouble in the mountains, and all things relating to the organisation. This is an event you don't want to miss!

This Friday, we are hosting our first Games Night of the semester. Join us for some mighty craic and take part in games like Among Us, Cards Against Humanity, Catan and more! This Sunday we'll be heading to the Galtee mountains in our neighbouring county Tipperary (Up Tip! Up Hiking!) for our 2nd Sunday Hike of the year.

This is a favourite of our former President David, and shouldn't be missed! As usual the sign up links will be available in our weekly email, so make sure to keep an eye out.

Hiking boots are compulsory for this trip.

If anyone is interested in the caving side of OPC then this is the place to be! We will hold an information session with regards to our SRT classes and what they are about. We will also be talking about what it is like to go exploring in the many caves you can find in Ireland. Hope to see lots of new faces and everyone is welcome!

YES, Girls Night is on this Wednesday 19th February at 7pm in the climbing wall! If you're a member of OPC and have been lurking in the background because you're a little bit intimidated this is you're chance to come along and enjoy a casual fun night climbing. Bring along something yummy and we can promise music, climbing and basically good vibes all round :)

At the end of week three we will be off to spend a weekend of hiking and shenanigans in the lovely Wicklow mountains. The trip costs €50 including transport, hostel, breakfast and dinner! Also be ready to trade your muddy hiking boots and waterproofs for some dress shoes, suits and gowns for our Valentine's Ball! 

This Sunday, the 9th of February, we are heading off to the beautiful Kerry to do the Torc Waterfall Walk. We will be leaving from the Stables archway at 9am and the trip will cost €10. As this is our introductory hike, hiking boots are not a requirement but are always recommended on our hikes. Jeans are not allowed to be worn under any circumstances and you will not be allowed onto the bus if you are wearing jeans!! An email will be sent out later in the week with more information. See you all out there :)

We will be holding our info night this Thursday 6th in KBG-012 at 7pm. If you want to know about our club and get involved then this is your chance! We are headed to the beautiful Dingle Peninsula in Co.Kerry for two nights. We will spend Saturday hiking up Mt Brandon and getting up to our usual debauchery. Make sure to check out the weekly email for more information about the trip.

Our annual excursion to Glendalough takes place on the 17th-18th of February! This is our biggest trip of the year with over 100 people piling onto buses to cosy up in Glendalough's finest hostel. A hike, a ball, a swim and new friends make this one of the highlights of the OPC's calendar!

The OPC is having it's AGM next Tuesday. At the AGM next years core committe will be elected. We will also discusss our plans for next year and we are also ordering club t-shirts :). THE AGM IS YOUR ONLY OPPORTUNITY TO ODER A T-SHIRT. WE ARE NOT TAKING ORDERS AFTERWARDS :(. Join us in Scholars afterwards for some finger food, music and general banter/entertainment.

the club will be having another weekend trip to the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. The sign up for this trip will be taking place this Thursday at 6pm in Red Raisins. The cost for the trip is €40 and it will be from April 8th-10th, just after Week 10.  

Club trips are great fun and a fantastic way to meet new friends and learn new skills. You won't be disappointed if you come.

Remember: This is a trip to the United Kingdom. If you are not an EU-citizen the OPC will not accept responsibility for anyone who suffers any injury that would require admittance to hospital. You are responsible for any injury you may incur on the trip. 

This Sunday we will be heading to the Galtee Mountains on the Limerick, Tipperary border. We'll be meeting at the Stables on Sunday morning where a bus will bring us there. The view from the 917.9m summit is spectacular and we will stop from lunch beside a remote lake. So bring a camera if you have one. Hikes are a brilliant way to get to know new people and make friends so make sure to reserve your spot if you're interested

It’s what ye have all been waiting for! Climb Everest is happening this Thursday! The aim of the event is to climb the height of Everest (8,848 meters) at the climbing wall (about 4 metres high). That’s a lot of climbing! The event will run all day Thursday starting at 11 am. Sponsorship cards are available at the climbing wall tonight, tomorrow and on Wednesday between 6.15 and 8.15. So get your friends, family and/or neighbours to support you. Go team!

This Wednesday at 6.30 in conjuction with the 10,000 step challenge we are having another night hike to Keeper Hill. Anybody who went on our night hike last Wednesday knows that it was really fun and the views from the top of the hill are out of this world. As this hike is in conjuction with the 10,000 step challenge it is free and you do not have to be a member of the club to attend so bring all your friends.:)

It’s that time of year again to elect a new committee! On the 4th of April (Thursday of week 11), we’ll be having our AGM, and all committee positions are up for grabs. If you have ever wanted to help out with the runnings of the club now is your chance to get involved.

This is a good time to start thinking about what role would suit you and talk to the current committee to find out more about what’s involved. Remember all members are eligible for positions, new or old, and as long as you are willing to put in a bit of work, any position could be yours.

We also need as many people as possible to attend to reach a quorum to make this official.

After the AGM, we will have a quiz that will be in aid of Pieta House, a very worthy cause and some finger food for a bit of fun and a chance to relax before exam season kicks off.
