Our very own UL Underwater chairperson, Michael Kane supported by Brittany, Odran, and Audrey were interviewed by Nationwide and spread the word about UWH and retelling the story of how we beat our rivials in UCD this year. Putting out the challenge to DCU who still remain unbeaten after 3 years!

Attending the inaugural Celtic Cup Tounament in 2022, Ireland was proud to present two competitive teams with a mixture of both youth and experience to the event.A few of our own Limerick stars played, scored and came home victourious
The Celtic Cup is a new competition setup to allow the Celtic nations of Ireland, Wales and Scotland a chance to compete against each other annually to gauge competitiveness, make new friends and celebrate our shared heritage and love for Underwater Hockey.

Craigavon Irish League
The first round of our Irish league kicked off in Craigavon’s newest pool South Lake Leisure Centre. The tournament was hosted by our very own UL Wolves UWH team, who booked the pool & organised the whole day - including the celebratory dinner!
There were 5 teams playing in the tournament:
The winning team is the undefeated DCU!!
The match opened with a tight fight between UL & QUB, with the first goal of day being scored by UL Captain Laura, (also ex-captain for Belfast and current Irish women’s Captain). There were tight games the entire day, with the Dublin teams neck and neck for the top spot! Over all we had a fantastic day of matches and Irish UWH will be back on the 23rd April for the Shamrock Cup - where we are determined to finally beat DCU!!

Women's Nationals 2022
This day last week, I brought some of our Irish UWH Women over to Leeds, UK to compete in the BOA Women's Nationals Tournament. The team was made up of Irish Women from all over the island and beyond (Wales & England too!). As the Captain of the Irish Women's team, I represented our team as the only woman this year travelling from the UL team - but was very vocal about how next year we will have many more players!
The tournament was a whole day affair and kicked off with our first match at 9am and finished with our last match just after 5pm. Round one eased us into the tournament with 9 minute games, this jumped to 12 minutes in Round two where we found our feet and really played our best. The playoffs were a lot tougher and consisted of 24 minute games with a 3 minute half time.
You can check out the results of all the matches below:
Round ONE:
South West Ladies | 6 | 0 | Irish Women |
Sussex & Wickham | 5 | 0 | Irish Women |
Round TWO:
Plymouth | 3 | 2 | Irish Women |
GB U19 | 0 | 3 | Irish Women |
SW Ladies Dev | 1 | 3 | Irish Women |
Irish Women | 6 | 0 | London Ladies B |
Irish Women | 9 | 0 | Bangor University |
Playoffs:
Chicks with Sticks | 2 | 4 | Irish Women |
Orkney | 7 | 0 | Irish Women |
Lancashire Ladies | 5 | 0 | Irish Women |
The above scores made our team the winners of Group C and 4th overall in the Plate Division.

Exciting news!
Our very own Chris Gallagher has completed his Level 1 certification in Refereeing Underwater Hockey!
Chris spent all of his Wednesday evenings in February learning the ins & outs of the rules of UWH and how to referee a match. This was a course hosted by the British Octopush Association's head referee Damien McNulty and went over how and when to call fouls in matches.
There will be around 4 referees in underwater hockey matches. Two of which will typically be in the pool following along with the match (they wear bright yellow tops and gloves along with a red hat as to not be mistaken for a player. There will also be a referee at the side of the pool who will control the buzzer (noise to stop play) and confirm any signals that have been made by the water refs. This will all be noted by the ref. at the table at the top of the pool.
We recommend getting familiar with the rules of UWH as you learn to play! The rules can be found on the CMAS site - click here! Hand signals that refs make to call fouls can be found here!
We're really looking forward to see Chris gain more experience as a ref and possibly move onto his Level 2 next!

Exciting update guys
As a celebration of launching this new UWH Club, we decided to order some new snorkeling gear for all our beginners.
We purchased the following pieces of gear.
All this gear will be available to purchase directly from the club so you can have your own personal gear. We encourage each club member to buy their own mask and snorkel as it will over time adjust to the shape of your individual face.
