AGM & Info Night

Posted 25th Sep 2023
Author Ryan O Donnell (Secretary)

Our AGM is taking place this Tuesday 26th at 7pm in S205 Schuman Building.

The AGM is where we elect our committee for the coming academic year.

With the election of a new committee always comes the stepping down of an old one. While of course they will still be kicking around the place (Can't get rid of them haha), its important to recognize how far we came and the people who made it happen.

Kat, Connor and Maeve were our hard working treasures this year. They slaved away on all the finances throughout the year without you knowing anything about it. And it all paid off, this year we were awarded with one of the best budgets we ever have. All thanks to the hard work and planning of these fine people.

The safety and development of our club is extremely important to allow us to grow our members skill level and ensure we are all safe while doing so. Elyssa updated the clubs safety statement this year after unexpected influences made us all worried about the clubs future. She led the charge making sure the clubs members were covered.

If you have seen our Instagram in the last year you'll see since September 2022 our quality and frequency boosted. This is all thanks to the talented work our Public Relations Officer Charlotte put in. Now we have amazing montages to show off to other clubs, new members and for ourselves to look back on. I don't know how you can make Achill Island look as cool as Morocco, but you definitely captured what a Surf Club trip is.

Did you know the club won intervarsity's last year? No? Well we did. Celtwake the wakeboarding intervarsity for all Irish college was organized by our very own Aaron. We had a very successful turnout and we ended up winning the thing too (shush, not like that). As well as this Aaron spend a lot of his own time driving our members down to Ballyhass himself to take them wakeboarding. And it only broke his car once. A very well done to the most hidden part of UL Surf Club.

A veteran of the club, having had completed 5 tours years in the club as our humble equipment officer, Brian did much more than organizing equipment. From trips, meetings, pool sessions Brian is always around looking to help wherever he can. Brian helped organize many of the funding requests for the equipment you use in the pool session, skate sessions and trips. Water without surfboards is just swimming, and we ain't a swim club.

Many of our older members have already moved on from their positions in previous years and simply hold the title of Advisor to the club. Always there giving a helping hand explaining the quirks of C&S we hadn't a clue about. Very big thank you to Kieran and Frank, our former President and Treasurer who helped the club get where we are today.

There are so many other people to thank. Some more on the committee such as Joe, Nick, Emma, Kelly, Colm, Hannah and Johanna. Who helped organize the Merch, Events, and Trips right up until now. Some of them are still kicking about, so no farewell just yet, your time will come. A big thank you as well to all the International Students who join us each year for all the adventures. You know who you are, you were always apart of the group and still are even though you home now. Keep up the surfing wherever you go, and don't be a stranger, you always have a board here. Finally the most hidden part of the club that help more than you might think. Hiding in pain sight like everyone else, but secretly an Alumni cult,  who can't get enough of the cheap student lifestyle..... but with big boy money now. Some say you can sniff them out by counting the number of Patagonia items they're wearing.

Last but definitely not least. Our overthrown outgoing Dictator President, Elias. Elias basically single handedly took us all to Morocco, our first international trip since before the pandemic. And it was a hit. Every single member said it was one of the best trips they have ever been on. (Those who disagreed we traded to the locals for 'good price my friend'). The trip was so successful it was chosen by all Clubs and Societies in UL as the Event of The Year. Our first award as a club in many years, if even. Elias is always around to help, always available for events, and always working away. Even this week getting ready for our Achill Trip, Elias is the one organizing the spots (No small job), making sure we can take as many people as possible. Thank you very much from all the committee for all the work you did throughout the year.

Thank you very much to you guys, all our members who make this all worth it. We had an amazing year. To our incoming committee no pressure, but big shoes to fill.

The long wait is finally over! We hope some of ye got a chance to show off yere skills ye learned last year out in the lineup on yere staycations this summer!!

For those who have yet to get back in the ocean since our last trip, I feel your pain! Not to worry we are doing everything we can to set up new trips and other ways of getting our members into the waves as soon as possible. For obvious reasons, this will be difficult and we will have to follow government advice but we are as eager as all of you to get back to everything that makes Surf Club so special from pulling into your first barrel to socialising and having fun with likeminded people outside the water!

Recruiting new members this semester will be tougher than ever so we would highly appreciate it if ye could spread the word about how much fun you've had in the club to ay new first years and/or international students by getting them to attend the Virtual Recruitment Drive on next Wednesday the 21st of October.

Feel free to sign up now on the UL Wolves site and also attend the Virtual Rec-Drive to let us know how you are doing and learn about what we have planned for you this semester!

Achill Island Surf Intervarsities

Author Ewan Duerden

Well its another fun fueled week at the UL Surf Club HQ, this time we have been planning a social weekend trip for a while now. We are headed to Achill Island for a 3 day trip hosted by GMIT! The trip will be from the 6th-8th March and the sign-ups are on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

The surf inter varsities will be held on the Saturday and Sunday and will involve numerous social competitions and of course judging on the different categories of surfing also. 2 nights in Castlebar town with many other clubs will be a sure way to expand our friend groups and find new people to surf with.

Our motto is to have fun and make friends while learning to surf so mixing with other universities and meeting new people and friends is the perfect weekend for everyone involved. We will be utilizing our new fleet of foam boards we got recently and tackling the surf for one of the most anticipated weekend trips of the semester.

Club AGM last Thursday

Posted 9th Feb 2020
Author Brian Mc Auliffe

Last Thursday the 6th of February we had our AGM to introduce new members to the club, show them how it works and how they can make the most of the club to have fun!

We also elected a new committee, some committee members managed to hold their positions but not without a little competition from other members who were eager to help the club run!

A few members on the committee had to give up their positions for various reasons so there were openings for PRO, Merchandise, Events and assistant Trips.

It was great to see at least two members compete for each of the committee positions, this showed that members are interested in keeping to club running and progressing.

It also meant that the club could vote on who they felt would be best for the position, making sure we have a strong, productive committee for the year!

Taking advantage of storm Ciara

A few of our members headed off to Lahinch early last Thursday morning to catch some of storm Ciara's waves before the brute of the storm hit the coast.

They caught some sick waves and are buzzing for the next swell, remember we encourage all members to avail of day trips like this, just find someone who's able to drive and don't be afraid to organise a crew to go using our Facebook group!!

Las Palmas International Trip Jan 2020

Posted 31st Jan 2020
Author Brian Mc Auliffe

We are just back from our amazing international trip to the sunny Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

With such a long Christmas break from college this winter, everyone on the trip was eager to get off the couch at home and surf every day in sunny warm water for a full week. The trip went smoothly without any problems thanks to our president Kevin for organising everyone, this made the trip super chill and fun.

All our beginner and intermediate members got up early every morning to do their lessons with the local surf school, every day they came back more stoked than the day before and happy with how much the surfing ability was improving over the week.

Our advanced members went on a Surfari with an advanced coach to different spots around the island, our advanced members rarely get a chance to benefit from advanced surfing lessons so this was an excellent opportunity for them to improve, especially since we have advanced international trips coming up soon!

Even when the surfing was done for the day, everyone managed to keep the fun going by chilling out in the hostel, exploring the beautiful scenery the island had to offer and indulging themselves in some of the island's culture. We can't wait for our next international trip and hope it will be just as fun!

New Foamies!

Posted 31st Jan 2020
Author Brian Mc Auliffe

Last semester the club purchased 15 new foam surfboards for all our beginner and intermediate surfers to use and improve their surfing skills.

The old foam surfboards in the club were not fit for riding waves in the ocean and our members were not enjoying their time in the water trying to learn on broken, waterlogged surfboards. Some of the old boards will still be used in our pool sessions but the new foamies will be reserved for the ocean.

This means that all members will be able to surf quality surfboards while on our weekend trips or day trips, we tested the new boards during our Bundoran trip at the end of last semester and everybody was stoked on how much fun they were.

For future trips, the club will be able to run our own lessons using our own boards and wetsuits, meaning we won't have to pay surf schools money for lessons, this will bring down the cost of our trips and spare money for fun activities!!

It is confirmed that UL Surf has been named champions of this year's cold vibrations surf Intervarsities between UL, NUIG, and UCC. it was a team event where each round won by a university gave them a point. we narrowly beat NUIG by 1 point which provided for a thrilling event that went down to the wire.  We also hosted the event in Lahinch, Co.Clare, which went down as a big success. This is a testament to the hours put into training our members at the pool and balance sessions, as well as the frequent trips to the coast to improve their abilities along with their own dedication and commitment to the sport.

UL Surf turn OPC

Thanks to great organisation by our Trips Officer, Elaina Duggan, UL Surf Club’s first trip of the semester went off without a hitch. We only needed to travel a short distance to get to one of our favourite spots, Lahinch, for the weekend. The waves might not have been superb but the craic certainly was. Friday night was spent preparing the our new members and Erasmus students for what was to come. Saturday was split between the beach and Kenny’s as some of us forwent surfing in favour of the Ireland vs. Italy match. Those who were determined to stay in the water were admired for their defiance of the freezing temperature, even with booties and hoods! We danced the night away in The ‘Mont, a requirement for any weekend spent in Lahinch. Sunday followed much the same pattern; the lack of swell caused some of our members to go in search of fun elsewhere and they stumbled upon a few of UL's OPC members in the Burren. Overall, it was a weekend well spent. We now look forward to a glorious return to Lahinch in March for our next event, where we will be hosting the Irish Surf Intervarsities and welcoming Surf Clubs from all over the country.

Considered to be one of the best surf spots in Ireland and luckily only an hour away from Limerick, Lahinch was the place chosen to hold UL Surf Club’s first trip of this semester, welcoming new and old members to another fun filled semester of surfing adventures. The weekend was set to be a success with conditions in favor for those who had not yet caught the first waves of their lives but also some nice swells setting in across the reefs of Lahinch for the more advanced surfers. Beginners were taught the principles of surfing by more experienced surfers, who took the time to accompany and take care of them. Patience, companionship and perseverance were some of the values learned on the trip. While sitting and waiting for waves, the perfect moment came for people to make new friends and share experiences making it very enjoyable for both Irish and International students. After an exhausting day of surfing, the Surf Club and its members decided to enjoy a nice night out on the town. It was Valentine’s and love was in the air. The following day surprised everyone with the unusually pleasant weather and a lovely glimpse of the sun. The surf was perfect and the sunset was amazing especially in the magnificent setting of the Cliffs of Moher. As the first trip back this semester, new members were able to understand what it feels like to be part of this club. Life -long friends are made, fantastic fun is had but not only that you are challenged to escape from the everyday routine and get out of your comfort zone.   Keep in touch with the UL Surf Club’s Facebook Group for more adventures and trips during the semester and don’t miss any new information. No matter your level of surfing, waves are waiting for you!

Lahinch trip

Our surf club had a massive success on our first trip back of the semester. Leaving the Stables at a casual 11am on Saturday our surfers crammed into cars to head down to the coastal beach town of Lahinch, which greeted our new and old surfers alike with sun and blue skies. As we all trickled into the hostel our members had an impromptu balance board session in the communal hangout room. Afterwards a few of our club members headed to the Cliffs of Moher to get a glimpse of Ireland’s most breathtaking and natural wonders. Heading back and suiting up for the frigid ocean.. Our surfers hit the waves. Our club members surfed and surfed away until the sun set! Trekking into the parking lot to dry off and head back to the lovely West coast Lodge to warm up with hot showers and a cuppa! The evening started at the Nineteenth to watch the match between Ireland and France (woo Ireland!) and then our surfers spent some time bonding with good tunes before we headed over to the Claremont to dance the night away. The Claremont saw some of the best dance moves of this century with our club members bustin a move all over the dance floor.. Shimmying and shaking all night long. After a massively successful dance party at the Claremont our members all headed to bed for a full on day of surfing awaited them. On Sunday morning we were greeted with cloudy skies and righteous waves. Our surfers trekked into the waves again suited and booted up with booties and hoods to face the day’s waves. After a couple hours of surf and fun our.. Freezing cold.. Surfers stripped down once again racing for the showers to warm up! Packing up and strapping the last of the boards to the cars our weekend was rolling to a close. What a massive success the surf clubs first trip back since Morocco! Lahinch was a grand ol’ time with new members and old members getting to know one another and spend some quality time in the beautiful blue ocean. Hope to see everyone at our next trip in Lahinch for the craic :)

UL Surf club is a rapidly expanding club, and from general day to day surfing, pool practice each Monday, weekend and international trips, it’s a club to watch out for. Semester 1 alone saw four amazing weekend trips to Ireland's most pristine areas, along with major improvements in developmental surfing throughout the club. The retaining of a huge group of incredibly enthusiastic people to the club this year is testament to that. This January saw UL Surf Club embark on an exotic, exciting journey to the tremendous Taghazout Surf village in the heart of Morocco. A huge group of keen surfers set off from the snowy Republic to the unknown for a fantastic week of surf, sun and adventure. After the stressful exam time the sunny break was well deserved and to say we made the most of it would be an understatement. From sunrise to sunset, the opportunity to improve on surfing was taken advantage of, even when the clouds decided to open up high in the mountainous terrain. Each morning we were greeted with the sounds of crashing waves, a sun filled, cloudless sky, and not to mention perfect surf conditions for beginners and intermediates. After the first, and well needed nights sleep, the remaining days consisted of early starts for the keen crew, ready to improve on their surf as much as possible. The fantastic beaches and general surf culture in and around the village made this so easy, with beaches within a 10 minute walk. Although the main focus of the trip was surf surf surf, a break was in order. This break from surfing for the day meant an adventure to the amazing Paradise Valley. The rush of adrenaline as the group plunged into the clear water below was exhilarating, and the views around us were unbelievable. After a refuel consisting of bananas and laughs, the group trekked back through the mountains back to the bus. There was no stopping the group as we returned home, in time for a beautiful sunset surf that evening. Adventures throughout the trip, from exploring the village, to the local markets, saw the club develop lasting friendships and very good haggling skills as shown by the club turtles Ali and Baba who are awaiting our return to Morocco next year. The surf, laughs and overall amazing time had by all on the trip were unforgettable, and we know that as a club we will continue to venture and grow through surf , all the while making great friends and memories. UL Surf welcomes students to join, no matter what your surfing ability! Look up UL Surf Club on Facebook, like our page and join our group. More details on the club can also be found on ulsurfclub.com

Strandhill Trip

The surf trip to Sligo was a massive success with two days full of amazing surf, weather, laughter and craic! We packed a few cars full of eager surfers and the Wolves sprinter full of boards and wetsuits ready for a weekend of surf. The journey started with a long three-hour road trip to the beautiful town of Strandhill Sligo where we settled into the wicked Surf-n-Stay hostel, which greeted us with a multi-colored disco ball ready for the weekends festivities. Friday night started with some hanging out and getting to know each other, playing games and talking about surf safety (always a first priority!). Rising at a casual hour on Saturday morning to a spectacularly sunny day, we helped ourselves to a tasty feast of cereal, toast and tea to fill our stomachs for a long day ahead. Upon arrival at the beautiful sandy beach we had our first surf lesson of the weekend, learning the “pop-up” and proper paddling skills from our very own Kalani. Ready to hit the waves a comfortable sized group of 20 surfers waded out into the cold ocean! There was loads of surf progression with class waves for learning and having good fun. After two hours of wicked surfing our shivering riders headed back to the cars to strip off the wetsuits and layer up with warm clothes. After our beginner’s session we headed out to watch some of our advanced surfers take on the swells! After they got their fix of salt water and waves, we reconvened back at the hostel for hot showers and a good ol’ nap session before dinner. As the night rolled in and our surfers rolled out of their comfy bunks with a new energy for the evening, we cracked on with the festivities. An impromptu bongo drumming and guitar session took over and we filled the hostel with sweet melodies and songs of teenage mutant ninja turtles. The night was still young so we headed to the local beach side pub for a night of dancing! The local band could hardly keep up with the wild energy of our club’s dancing capabilities, jamming and grooving the best of the oldies. Hanging up the dancing shoes the wild night came to a close with our merry club members chilling out in the common room and some tucking in for the night. Rising in the late Sunday morning to rays of sunshine through the curtains, we packed up our bags and filled our tummies full of food for a second chance at the waves. The waves were slightly choppier on the Sunday morning, but our surfers trekked on and paddled into the cold ocean yet. Our beginners made substantial progression in their surfing abilities from the previous days ride, and we surfed for a good couple hours. With salty and tangled hair, shivering fingers, our surfers stripped off the wet wetsuits yet again and layered up for the road trip back to Limerick. All in all the two day weekend to Sligo was a massive success filled with class waves, tons of surf, and lots of fun! Can’t wait to see everyone on our next semester’s trips :)

Lahinch Mega-Weekend Trip

Posted 4th Nov 2014

The recent surf club trip to Lahinch can only be described as massive. We all knew as soon as we had over 60 people signed up within a week that this trip was going to be a memorable one. So excited for the trip to come 2 people even missed the bus after they lost track of time making their (epic) costumes. We almost made it to Lahinch in one go, but hilariously the bus broke down completely blocking up the small town of Ennistimon 5 miles away. Using the surf club mantra of ‘Never Panic’ the drivers already at the hostel charged out the doors like the Thunderbirds doing multiple shuttles for all the stranded surf club members. When everybody reached the hostel the fun and games began culminating in the Claremont Nightclub opening especially for us. Lets just say we’d give the UL Dance Soc a run for their money. The pair of missing surfers made their appearance bright and early the next morning, and as all the tired heads caught up on their precious sleep, several eager beavers headed out into the water for an early morning surf. The waters were choppy but manageable, and after huddling back to the warm hostel safe and sound, they enjoyed some much needed breakfast and laughs with the remainder of the group as everybody reminisced about the night before. After the morning mayhem, we all headed onto the main beach for a lesson, riding the waves for a couple of hours. The Lahinch Hostel was soon filled with water logged wetsuits and tired surfers, making their way from the showers to the cosy bunks of luxury for a good old afternoon nap. While some people stayed in the living area watching TV and chatting, others went to explore the town, chilling out by the river nearby. Unfortunately the waters were too choppy and the tide too high to return to the water later that day, but that didn’t dampen the mood! Preparation was underway for the ABC party and everybody resided to their rooms to get creative for the exciting night ahead. From cardboard to curtains, and black bags to tinfoil, everybody made a really good effort with the costumes and we celebrated with some drinks and laughs in the hostel before heading out to the Claremont Nightclub to boogie the windy night away. It was a very successful, banter-filled night for all (even if some costumes didn’t quite survive) and the well rested heads arose bright and early the next morning to some breakfast before heading to the beach for the final surf of the weekend. Some adventurers visited the captivating Cliffs of Moher before we all headed home exhausted yet exhilarated from the weekend experiences! Thanks for reading, Sydney.

Lahinch Day Trip

20 members of UL Surf club are just back from a Sunday scouting mission to Lahinch ahead of the mega weekend on the 17th-20th of October. We enjoyed a typical Irish day out on the water, sideways rain, winds and all the pasty people probably somehow got sunburnt. While most might find the idea of bed on a Sunday morning more appealing, not these hardy first years. The enthusiasm shown by our beginners to take all that was thrown at them from the Atlantic was infectious. As a result I can safely say that every beginner enhanced their physical and mental surfing capabilities! After plenty of practice we got changed into dry clothes and charged for the customary chicken fillet roll. Not finished with adventure for the day we decided to check out the nearby Cliffs of Moher, bypassing the usual tourist viewing spot for some better views. Satisfied with the spectacular views we made for Limerick washed all the equipment and had an end-of-day beverage and chat in the cosy Hurlers pub. A great appetizer to the main event trip to Lahinch. There is not many spaces remaining so if you haven't signed up the time is nigh. Wow, what a weekend. The Surf club hosted one its largest and most successful trips on record with over 70 people travelling to one of Ireland's most beautiful locations in County Kerry. Here they were greeted with blistering sunshine and perfect conditions for beginners to learn how to surf. After meeting early on Saturday morning we arrived on the beach at around noon. Here the next generation of Kelly Slaters were given a comprehensive first surf lesson by qualified instructors accompanied with on the water feedback and craic. After a lengthy session we headed back to the hostel where 20 of our number would be staying for a delicious home cooked meal. Promptly from here, we all made our way to the breathtaking camp spot, home to 50 campers for the night and lit up a warm campfire while chatting about the triumphs and funny moments of the day. Later on we cooked up another feast on the Barbecue and welcomed a DJ renowned for playing in Limerick nightclubs. After plenty of boogieing we all hit the hay tired from a long day of excursions and excited for more. Rising at a casual 11am we cleaned up our campsite ensuring that we left no trace of our being there, had some breakfast and hit the water for an even longer day of surfing. After packing up everybody made it back to Limerick tired but immensely satisfied. From a committee point of view it was amazing to see the progress that the newbies made this weekend and so many of them have told us that this trip was the highlight of their time in UL/Ireland thus far. Hopefully we can continue to deliver experiences like this. See you on the next Trip :)
