About Kayak Club

Looking for something different to get involved in at UL? Come join UL Kayak Club!

Whether you have never been in a kayak before or you already know your way around a river, there is a place for you in the club. You will have the chance to learn new skills, get out on the water, travel around Ireland and abroad, compete, and meet a great group of people along the way.

We kayak across a range of disciplines including whitewater, freestyle, long-distance, canoe polo, surf kayaking and slalom. Our regular pool sessions run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 21:45, where beginners can learn the basics and experienced members can continue to develop their skills. We also run flatwater freestyle and canoe polo sessions for anyone who wants to try something different.

Once you are ready to get out on the river, we run regular whitewater trips in Castleconnell to help members build their river skills. Long-distance trips can be organised on the 6 km run behind the boathouse, while more experienced members regularly head to local runs such as the Curraghgower Wave and the Mulkear.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved beyond regular training too. We run assessments and courses throughout the year for members looking to gain proficiency awards or instructor qualifications. We also travel to competitions such as ICUPs, Galway Fest and the Kayak Intervarsities, where UL Kayak Club has a strong track record and always turns up in force.

Trips are a huge part of the club. We travel around Ireland for national trips, including river trips and kayak surfing in Lahinch. Our winter trip usually takes us to Wales for a week, while our Summer Alps Trip takes members through Slovenia, France and Italy for three weeks of kayaking.

You do not need to be an expert to take part. Freshers and beginners who reach the required proficiency level can join our trips too.

And when we are not kayaking, there is still plenty happening. We run social events throughout the year, including our UV Paint Party and Red Bull & Paint, giving everyone plenty of opportunities to get involved and meet other members.

If you are looking for a club where you can try something completely new, get out of your comfort zone, travel, compete, or simply spend time with a good group of people, come and give UL Kayak Club a go.

Request membership through Clubs & Societies and keep an eye on our social media and club group chats for information about training, trips, competitions and events.

See you on the water!
