We've planned a training trip to Portroe for our trainees D1* Open Water Dives. This will be a day trip, meeting at the UL Boathouse we'll pack gear and aim to be arriving in Portroe for 9am opening time. It's €25 annual registration fee for the Dive Centre the first time you visit and €25 Daily Access Fee to use the facilities. 

Portroe has toilets, changing rooms, kitchenette area, the quarry is a fresh water training facility and has excellent visibility for our novices to practice there skills in. Be sure to bring cash, towels, a change of warm clothes, logbooks and a packed lunch. 

Meet at UL boathouse for snorkel sunday. Pack gear Friday at the boathouse, leaving early Sunday morning for Dromineer. 

Trainee trip to Kerry for some excellent snorkeling & shore diving.

Staying at the hostel central to most of the dive sites and the nearest town of Cahersiveen, we'll be looking to check out dives like Glen Pier, Coonanna pier, Kells Bay, Knightstown old pier, Reenard point & Cuas Crom beach. 

Packing gear into the trailer on Thursday evening, departing Friday after college/work & returning to UL boathouse Sunday evening. 

Opportunity for open water snorkel qualifications to be completed for our newbies. 

Meeting at UL boathouse to pack gear, and then make way to New Quay for meeting at the Pier 10am for a kitted brief.

This IVs are hosted by DCU and taking place on the Oct Bank Holiday weekend. They plan to put on a great weekend, so get ready folks!! No doubt, the infamous "boat race" will be a key moment during the weekend.

Welcome back to a new academic year. To get every back in the water after the summer we're organizing a trip to the beautiful coral beach in Carraroe. This is a weekend trip so we'll meet at the boathouse Friday after work/college, pack all the gear, organize carpooling and hit the road.

Hope for 2 beautiful shore dives each day with a possible night dive if conditions allow, so bring the torches and charge the batteries. Returning Sunday evening to the boathouse to wash everything down and pack away. Please pay a trip deposit of €80 to the club account to secure a place. The price will go towards covering food, accomodation, transport, and compressor fuel.

The trip is open to all levels. 3 nights accommodation at Derrylahan Hostel, Teelin (€75pp) in shared dorms. The hostel is ideally located opposite the Pier. Please pay €25 into club account ASAP to secure a spot.

The plan is to head up early on the 29th and hopefully get one dive in that day. Full days diving planned for 30th/31st and a morning dive on the 1st before heading back to Limerick. We're bringing the boat - so you'll get some boat dives in too. Towing costs will be split between the group and boat dives are €12.

Accommodation is self catering so it would be great to get volunteers making breakfast / dinner. Usually we do a big club shop and split the cost among the group (please indicate any special dietary requirements on the form). If you want to bring your own food that's totally cool too.

This is a Training and Dive logging opportunity to practice skills and log dives. Gear will need to be prepped and packed at least 24hours before going as timing is key to avoid late in water adn exit time considerations. The charge to dive at the centre is 12.50. or round up to 13€. THis is a cost to cover centre use.

Instructors are available to support training requirements and work up dive opportunities for Test examination.

Dive will be typically around 40-50mins depending on depth and air consumption considerations.

The location provide good visibility and good conditions to support diving where conditions at sea are no longer favourable.

Weather looks possible to dive Lean on Sunday. Weather conditions and depth says qualified divers only i.e more than 10 dives preferred.  Expecting poor visibility (like a night dive) . 

Plan B will be 1 dive in New Quay at high tide (mid afternoon)

Register interest here - and if the buddy pairs are suitable the dive is on i.e 1*s will need a 2* or higher. Given the expected conditions I would like to avoid trios (unless 2 instructors) .  We will confirm the pairs before Sunday so no one is disappointed and there's no 3s. 

Dive NewQuay - Near Kinvarra

NewQuay Dive is a single Shore Dive/Snorkel option: High Tide is 14.30 to facilate anyone eligible to dive.   8 Meter max depth: Temperatures likely to be around 10degree. Sea temperature warmer than fresh water.

Advised to bring Warm Clothes: No changing area, Entry point is back of Linnanes Restaurant. Option to avail of restaurant after. Lots of small fish to see, Lobster, crab, shrimp. 

Dive is a drift dive........Based around tide conditions.

Entry and exit is safe and easy.

Sunday Diving this weekend at the Bridges of Ross (15mins outside Kilkee). Can pack gear at the boathouse friday. First dive around 10am, second dive, possibly at Leen in the afternoon. Bridge's of Ross is not suitable for beginner trainees so this will be a 1* and up dive. 

March 16th - 19th in Knightstown, Valentia Co. Kerry.

3 nights accommodation (approx€70pp). Please pay €25 into the club account ASAP to secure a spot, at the moment places are limited to 12 people. This trip is open to all levels, instructors will be on hand for trainees.

The plan is to head down early on the 16th and hopefully get an afternoon dive in before the celebrations begin. Full days diving planned for the 17/18th and a morning dive the 19th before heading back to Limerick.

We encourage all members to get involved with the running of the club, if you think you have the skills and are up for the job the committee roles are as follows: Chairperson: manages all aspects of the committee, ensuring the smooth running of the club, main point of contact between UL Clubs and Societies and ULSAC Secretary: manages club organisation and communications, planning meetings, booking vehicles etc. Treasurer: looks after the club finances, submitting budgets, ensuring fess are paid etc. Dive Officer: manages all diving related activities, club dive trips, dive safety (does require diving experience, not one for new divers) Public Relations Officer: looks after club social media, advertising events and being a point of contact for people outside the club. Training Officer: manages all aspects of dive training in the club (another one not for beginners) Boating Officer: manages all aspects related to the boat (some knowledge of boat maintenance required) Equipment Officer: looks after all club gear, ensuring equipment is in service and good working order Events Officer: responsible for organising events in the club, from helping the DO with dive weekends to running club fundraisers Underwater Hockey Officer: responsible for all UWH elements within the club, training, trips etc. Other Roles: Deputy/Assistant roles to help share the workload (Treasurer, Boating, Equipment), OCM, general committee member who helps where they can (great role for someone with no-previous committee experience)

All divers attending must register for membership - Cost €25 euro (Valid until 31-December-2023)

The cost for diving is now €25 per day.  (So startup 50euro)

Diving is in a freshwater slate Quarry where temperatures currently are currently are in the range of 7-8degreeC.

Payment of 50Euro will be made at Dive Centre before getting in water.

Dive equipment will be prepared Friday evening or Saturday.  

Dive will be at least 20mins.. 2 Dives may be logged  ... Max depth 10meters...

Other option considered is 1 dive for a minimum of 35minutes.

The club is bringing in a GP to run dive medicals on Wednesday Nov 9th. You will be randomly assigned a 10 min slot anytime between 4pm - 9pm. We will make the times visible once everyone has signed up. If you need to change time you will need to organise a swap with someone else on the list, we will not be able to facilitate picking your own time. If you cannot make it next Wednesday you will need to arrange a medical with your own GP. 

The cost of the medical via the club is €40pp, this is to be paid into the club account prior to the Medical (please text Colm, Alex or Mark once paid).

First off, a very warm welcome to the club from myself and the rest of the ULSAC committee. I'm Mark, the club's Training Officer. I'll be your point of contact for all training related activities. I’d also like to introduce Sinead - Club Secretary, Patrick - Club Chairperson and Naomi - Club Diving Officer. They along with the rest of the committee are here to help you. Below is some very basic information on what’s in store for you in the coming months. What’s most important is that you attend the Trainee Info Night on Tuesday WK3 (Sept 20th).

Diver 1* CMAS Program

You will shortly begin your journey into the world of SCUBA diving! First things first, you need to get certified. ULSAC is a member of Diving Ireland, a CMAS affiliated amateur training organisation. Diving Ireland is our governing body, setting the standards for diving, training and, providing all certifications. As such we teach the CMAS Diving Program.

You as trainees will begin the first level of CMAS training, the Diver 1* (one Star) program.

This program is split into 4 parts, Theory (lectures/workshops), Snorkel Training, Scuba Training, and Openwater Snorkel/Scuba training.

Theory

 8 lectures where you will learn all aspects of diving, physiology, dive physics, equipment, diving safety etc. We aim to run all lectures on a single day, either a Saturday or Sunday early  in October. You must attend this session! We will choose a day that suits at the info night next week.

Snorkel Training

Pool and open water sessions. This is where you learn fundamental skills and gain confidence in the open water. It is the introduction to basic equipment, mask, fins, wetsuits etc. and skills, mask clearing, finning technique etc. There will be an open water snorkel trip in October.

Dive Medicals / Diving Ireland Membership / Logbook

Before moving to SCUBA you must pass a dive medical with a GP. We bring a GP on campus to conduct these medicals, the price is €40pp. You can also do these via your own GP.

Once you pass your medical you will need Diving Ireland Membership (€55 students / €110 non-students - Yearly). Diving Ireland Membership is your insurance to dive. There are many benefits to Dive Ireland membership, we will discuss this at the info night.

Dive Ireland Logbook - €15. Essential for tracking all training, diving, certifications etc.

You will not be allowed to continue to SCUBA without a Medical, Dive Ireland Membership and Logbook

Scuba Training

Learning all aspects of SCUBA diving in the safety of the pool. From clearing your mask to helping your buddy, you will learn everything you need to become a qualified and competent scuba diver.

Open Water Scuba Training

Culmination of all the above skills in the open water. You and your instructor will dive in the open water. Putting everything you’ve learned into practice, once passed you will be a qualified scuba diver certified to dive to 25m! From here you can go onto the CMAS Diver 2* course and learn to become an independent diver.

Dive the wormhole, nudi cave and around Inishmore.

Hostel booked on Inishmore for 10 people. Accommodation will cost 36 per person. Dives cost will be divided evenly between everyone to cover towing and boat fuel costs. Because of extra distance it will very likely cost more than the usual 12.

Pay your share of the accommodation to reserve your space. 36 euro.

If you end up doing just the one dive it will end up being pretty expensive as towing costs will be divided between everyone.

We will load all the gear in doolin and 2 tanks per person. Everyone will travel over by ferry and meet the boat on Aran. For the third dive we will get fills in the dive center there.

Food not planned so bring a sandwich for lunch and we'll get dinner in the pub. There's a shop on Aran so we can cook there if wanted and breakfast on Sunday is included.

Trainees welcome but only if you've dived from the boat before, so if interested you need to make sure you go on a club trip the before Aran

Dive Portroe - As the weather forecast may be challenging to support diving at sea, opting to Dive in Portroe Quarry to support any dive logging and any other training requirements.

So diving opportunity open to all members, but, ideally at any new members who need to log dives in order to get their Diver 1 star certs.

March 17th - 20th in Ballinskelligs Co. Kerry.

3 nights accommodation for €60pp. Please pay €25 into the club account ASAP to secure a spot, at the moment places are limited to 16 people. This trip is open to all levels, instructors will be on hand for trainees.

The plan is to head down early on the 17th and hopefully get an afternoon dive in before the celebrations begin. Full days diving planned for the 18/19th and a morning dive the 20th before heading back to Limerick.

Accommodation is self catering so it would be great to get volunteers making breakfast / dinner. Usually we do a big club shop and split the cost among the group (put any special dietary requirements below). If you want to bring along your own food that's totally cool too.

Finally, we'll be discussing the next steps for the future and development of the club along with the events and activities we'll be running this semester. If you're new to the club, we'd love for you to come along and meet everyone! We will be running designated info and meet and greet nights specifically for new members too. Of course, it's a Halloween themed EGM so get your costumes ready - the committee will be judging, and scuba-gear doesn't count as a costume!

Please have your swim gear with you and be ready to jump in the pool. ? To complete the fitness test you will need to be an approved member of UL Sub Aqua on ulwolves.ie. The fitness test is a 200m freestyle swim, followed by 50m backstroke and a 30 second breath hold. It is not timed and it's super manageable. ?

If you haven't already done so, we can collect the 20 euro membership payment on arrival to the info session tomorrow night. For those who have paid online we can approve membership on arrival. Looking forward to finally meeting you guys in person.

Calling all Divers, UWH Players and Snorkelers - It's that time of year again!

We will be having our Annual General Meeting on Friday the 12th of February, at 07:30 pm via a Zoom Meeting and would love for you to attend. Like the EGM, this is open to all of our members old and brand new and we highly encourage you to come along! Here we will go over how the club has changed and grown since our EGM in OCtober, especially with everything that has happened with the ongoing pandemic and the increase in restrictions for the foreseeable future. As per usual, during the AGM the entire committee will be stepping down and re-elected. This is your chance to get onto the Sub Aqua Club committee!  All positions will be up for grabs (Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Diving Officer, Training Officer, UWH Officer, Equipment Officer, Boating Officer, Events Officer and Ordinary Committee Member (OCM)), but be aware that these positions all have requirements that range from simply being a member of the club, to being a highly trained veteran Scuba Instructor. That said, you should always be prepared to give a hust for the popular positions!

We highly encourage some of our newer members from the semester just finished to look at joining committee, specifically for the role of OCM. You will be in the brain of the club, getting a taste of how the club is run and will be at all committee only events (like the CLubs and Societies Ball!); but fear not! The OCM (currently Sean Lynch) has the role of communicating between members to the committee (especially new trainees and players), engaging in brainstorming/planning of events and fundraisers and essentially aiding in a range diverse set of tasks. It's a fantastic way to ease into a committee setting without the stress of an intense role.

We will be discussing training procedures for Scuba and UWH on the night, the development of the club along with the events and activities we'll be running this semester. After the official meeting is over, we'd like to invite members to stick around for a virtual social evening! Here we'll just shoot the breeze and have a bit of craic before this semester really picks up! As always, feel free to ask any questions you have about the club, UWH, snorkeling, scuba, the committee, etc here.

Please join with your full name, and we will admit you from the waiting room once we confirm its you. Looking forward to seeing our old and new members there!

Welcome to our first games night of the semester - Codenames!

Open to all members!

Starting at 7.30pm on Thursday and as per usual running until we can handle no more, join us on a top secret mission on your desktops and phones to contact all our undercover agents in Codenames! The aim of the game is to guess related words on a grid by word association It's a really simple and fun game, and a great way to get to know how people think. You can access this game here: https://codenamesgame.com/ , on the Codenames.game website, or through the mobile phone App. As always the how-to-play will be explained during the Zoom call on Thursday, but fear not! Codenames is a very simple and fun game to get us back into the swing of things and to say hi after the New Years! So pop by on Thursday for a chat and a game ! As always along with being hosted here, we will post the link to zoom and the link to the game into the club Whatsapp. If you'd like to attend, drop our Events Officer Sean Matthews a message on Whatsapp or Teamer so we have an idea of the numbers. We will be using zoom as usual to communicate with players throughout the rounds, so feel free to pop in and out all night long.

***As always, here at the Sub Aqua club we encourage good sportsmanship and fair play in all of our activities and events, so anyone displaying toxic or general behaviour not in line with C&S's behaviour policy will be given a warning. If the behaviour persists, you will be put in timeout.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SNORKELERS AND DIVERS - PILOT COURSE

Course will run via Zoom 19th and 26th of January 2021

This is the second half of the new photography pilot course. If you have not already attended part 1, please do not attend this one! The renowned underwater photographer Martin Kiely will be teaching a pilot course on the specifics of underwater photography and equipment through Zoom on Thursday the 21st of January. Once restrictions permit, we will be organising test dives with our resident photographer and D.O. Mark!

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SNORKELERS AND DIVERS - PILOT COURSE

Open to all club members, please book through the Diving.ie portal. The cost of the full course is EURO 30.00, payable through the booking portal. Starting on Tuesday the 19th at 7.30pm, we are kicking off the Trainee Theory lecture series virtually with an Information Night and update from our Diving Officer Mark and Training officer Brian on our 2021 plans for working around covid-19. We encourage all trainees for diving, snorkelling and UWH to attend as it will contain vital information as to what the new semester of activities will look like!

Meeting between members, Committee and Mon 1 CFT/ Diving Ireland Instructors to discuss the impacts of covid-19 on training new divers and on training/upskilling Instructors in the current climate. M1 instructors and relevant members have been notified for attendance. If you have not been notified of this meeting, don't worry you do not have to attend!

NUIG/GMIT SAC will be running a Christmas Quiz online this year All proceeds from the quiz will go to the RNLI, who are a voluntary organisation that save lives at sea every year, as a scuba diving club, they are a group very close to our own heart. We at UL Sub Aqua are hoping to have a good number involved in the quiz to drum up as much support as possible for the RNLI. There will be some awesome prizes and everyone involved is invited to bring along their friends and family for a fun night of hilarious quiz rounds and banter. It's that time of year again!

We will be having our EGM on the 28th of October at 07:30 pm via a Zoom Meeting and would love for you to attend. This EGM is open to all of our members old and brand new! Here we will go over how the club has changed and grown since our AGM in February, especially with everything that has happened with the ongoing pandemic. We will also be having a changeover for some committee members with the positions of Secretary, Public Relations Officer, and Events Officer available. More positions may become available on the night, but be prepared to give a short hust!

Finally, we'll be discussing the next steps for the future and development of the club along with the events and activities we'll be running this semester. If you're new to the club, we'd love for you to come along and meet everyone! We will be running designated info and meet and greet nights specifically for new members soon, so don't worry if you can't make this. If you do attend however, you can be in a chance of winning a club t-shirt on the night! Of course, it's a Halloween themed EGM so get your costumes ready - the committee will be judging, and scuba-gear doesn't count as a costume!

Intervarsities in Kilkee! There will be diving, snorkeling, beach clean ups, a pub quiz, and fancy dress competition!

Come down to SG17 to meet our committee and be introduced to the wonderful world of sub aqua in Ireland.

After a chat we'll head down to the purpose built 25m diving pool in the UL Arena and give diving a go .

Wolves membership and swim gear required for the try-a-dive. 

Prices are €20 for students. €40 for staff/alumni. 

This will be followed by a club social evening with free pizza provided. 

UL Sub Aqua are hosting the prescreening of Ken O'Sullivan's Ireland's Deep Atlantic, An ocean documentary showcasing the amazing wildlife off the West Coast of Ireland. With an awesome soundtrack, neverbefore seen animal behaviour and a Q&A session with the presenter himself, this is dfinitely an event worth procrastinating for!

UL Sub Aqua Club will be having our annual fundraiser Bake sale. This year it's a seafood bake sale. You sea our food and you buy it XD. We'll be outside the Library from 11-2 or whenever we run out of food.

Remember Fish are Friends, not Food! so there's nothing fishy about our bake sale...well at least not the food.

So the club is getting to try out the new diving pool this semester. Hope you guys can make it!

The Sub Aqua Club will be having our AGM on Tuesday Week 3. We'll be electing a the new committee and all the usual things. We're going o be ordering some pizza as well, so make sure to be there. 

The Sub Aqua Club are having our swimming test for new members in the arena today. It's vital that any potential member takes the test!
