USPA Coach Course

On August 26th, 3 of our club members travelled to Seville to gain coach ratings under the United States Parachute Association. Giving all the horror stories of airports, flights, missing baggage we were expecting a difficult travelling experience, surprisingly it went without a hitch, nobody left their passport on the plane this time. We jumped in our rental car and a short time later we were in Seville.

The following morning, we were out of bed long before sunrise, the feeling before visiting a new drop zone is indescribable. We arrived at Skydive Spain and were checked in in no time at all, the noise of rolling hanger doors usually means one thing, jumping is about to begin. We got our names on the manifest and into the sky we went. Over the next two days we got well acquainted with skydiving at Skydive Spain, the aircraft, the landing area and met with some amazing people. We met with Marcus the course director on the fourth day, with his teachings and experience he taught us to be competent coaches over 3 days, from classroom theory to physical training aids and finally two in air evaluations. It was a difficult undertaking, but the sense of accomplishment upon completion was overwhelming.

Completing the course signalled our final day at Skydive Spain, we got back in out car and made for the open road to the next stage of our trip, as it was late afternoon we didn’t need to rush so we took the scenic roads through the Spanish country side, two hours later on an unassuming road we crossed the border into Portugal, not long later thingsd to look just a bit familiar, we were on the road to E?vora home of Skydive Portugal, while the exhilaration of a new drop zone is indescribable, returning to one where you know of good people, good planes, good food and good vibes is euphoric. The sense of achievement on gaining our new rating did not truly hit until we filled in the check in documents, next to question “ratings” we were able to write “coach”. We were given a quick refresh on the drop zone, but we were already in a place where we belonged. Load number one of the day, we were in the sky and the rest is history.
