The Economics & Investments Society has a series called ‘in conversation with’ where a committee member hosts a fireside-like chat with industry experts. 

The aims of this discussion with Billy Kelleher MEP follow the parliamentary activities of Mr. Kelleher, notably the European Parliament's delegation for EU-US relations and his work in ECON and FISC. Questions will be asked on these topics followed by questions on the ‘Europeanisation’ of Ireland, reflecting on 51 years of membership and the importance of being an informed European citizen with the upcoming European elections.

The latest in a series of events looking at applications of Poker skills and strategies in the real world.

Mr. Jamie Flynn, who twice competed in the World Series of Poker, talks to us about the basic principles of Poker, the life skills and strategies which can be learned from the game and how those skills can be used in real-world, every day situations.

Tonight's meeting will be a discussion of the 1987 movie Wall Street and what it's about (corporate raiding, insider trading, stock market manipulation... all that stuff).

We'll also be talking about conglomerates (think really big, diverse companies).

This Wednesday (week 8), Mark Flood the director of Renatus Capital will be joining our society for the evening to discuss the company and the role of a private equity associate. Renatus is a private equity firm with investments in companies both in Ireland and the UK. This session will be of particular interest for those in final year or recent graduates who are looking for an incredible opportunity! This is a members only event so please make sure to register on the wolves site in advance of the meeting!

"Behavioural Economics & Decision Making" featuring: Professor Liam Delaney 

              21st of February @ 6:30 pm in the Kemmy Business School. 

Liam Delaney is Professor of Economics at UCD and Visiting Professor of Economics at Stirling University.

He has worked at the intersection of economics and psychology for his career and has published widely in both economics and psychology journals.

He is particularly interested in the measurement foundations of behavioural welfare economics and has built several interdisciplinary projects examining how to measure real-world economic preferences. He is currently developing a major new centre for behavioural science and public policy at UCD Geary Institute.

The event offers the opportunity to learn about an alternative perspective about economics and one that should be of interest for everyone!

We are running our annual trip to the Kilkenomics Festival in Kilkenny on Saturday 10th November.

Kilkenomics is the world’s first economics and comedy festival, which brings together some of the world’s leading economists, financial analysts and media commentators with some of our funniest, sharpest stand up comedians.

"Forecasting the Irish Economy" - A Central Bank perspective  featuring guest speaker Stephen Byrne.

Stephen will give an overview of the Irish economy at present from the perspective of the forecasting division in the Irish Central Bank and also an insight into his own research, in particular the broader measures of slack in the economy, potential impact of non tariff barriers on trade and some other issues. He will also speak about what it is like to work in the Central Bank and thoughts for people considering a career along those lines.

We are holding a brief society meeting in preparation for the Kilkenomics 2018 Trip which is taking place on the 10th of November. Early registration is vital so please register your interest in the trip! We will be announcing some of the events that will be released in coming days so stay in tune to see which leading economists and top comedians are featured.

Society Meet & Greet meeting followed by Social Night in Scholars afterwards. 

We are holding a brief Meet & Greet session for new members to give a quick overview of who we are and what we do. There will be FREE Pizza for all those in attendance so get there early! We are then heading to Scholars after for a few socialables and a bit of craic. See you there!

We are holding a Bloomberg trading workshop in the Bloomberg trading terminal on the second floor of the Kemmy Business school @ 6pm on Wednesday the 14th of March.

We are holding in preparation for the upcoming annual trip to Kilkenomics. The meeting will detail the intinerary for the trip. Attendance is complusory. 

We are having a society night out to the greyhound track in Limerick on Thursday in collaboration with the Greyhound Society and the Horse Racing Society. It is set to be a fun filled night and plenty of craic. 

We have secured a great valued deal for members of the society who are interested in going.

The event will be €5 and that will cover you admission, a race card, our own reserved enclosure and also finger food. The bus is another €4 on top of this so the total cost will come to €9 for the night. Bus leaving UL @ 6:45 pm

Jackie will speak about her career in Financial Services and also Fintech. She is currently Chief Commercial Officer at AssetLogic. She is a professionally qualified financial services specialist, with over 25 years in industry. She will speak about her journey into the investment world, change management, leadership and mentoring within the same environment. Jackie will also detail the strengths and weaknesses together with the enormous pressures of the evolving regulatory environment and the challenges it brought.

Aim is to provide students with an insight into the Futures in Finance and also help students with meticulous graduate program application process which faces students when beginning their career. The Futures in Finance segment seeks to outline the different sectors in financial services as it is a broad field with many different avenues to pursue. The workshop is focused on applying to accountancy firms and will go through the dreaded application form process in detail and how best to fill them in.

This event will be delivered by Sinead English, a lecturer in Career Development and Finance in UL’s Kemmy Business School. Sinead is also a career management and networking specialist. She guides clients through each stage of the career planning, job hunting and job securing process. She also spent 13 years working in Investment Banking in London, with significant experience gained in JP Morgan and Chase Manhattan.

 Event admission is €3 at the door for members (membership is €5)

Tuesday 25th of September sees the launch of the Bank of Irelands FX Trade Off Competition. This exciting trading competition offers participants the opportunity to learn grassroots trading  techniques with the incentive of generous prizes, with top place receiving  €1500 cash + Summer Internship in Bank of Ireland Global Markets. 

Registration for the competition opens tomorrow, Monday 17th of September.

The Bank of Ireland on campus in UL will host a launch night on Tuesday 25th of September. 

Students who attend launch nights will be given priority. Make sure to attend your university’s launch night to get priority for a place in the competition.

The competition will then begin on the 5th of October.  We encourage as many interested society members to actively participate in the competition as possible!!
