Meet Alana Carney, President of Dance UL (2023/24):
"I joined Dance UL in my first year in 2020, when I was taking my classes online, and it was a great way to brighten up my week. In my second year, I auditioned for the hip-hop team. I didn't know anyone in Dance UL, but I immediately fell into a dance family and felt so accepted and loved by people who had probably been there for two years already. Then I joined the committee."
"In my third year, I went on Erasmus but was promised a spot on the hip-hop team, which made me feel so secure because they knew I was away but still cared about and remembered me".
"Connor was like a mentor to all of us, and he encouraged me to go for the president role, which was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made. It was the perfect way to end my academic career, finishing with something was so passionate about and had been deeply-involved in throughout my time at UL.
"Being able to choreograph the hip-hop team with Ciara Troy was an amazing achievement for me Everything about Dance UL pushed me to be a better person, step out of my comfort zone, and become more confident. Finishing off my experience in UL as president, alongside all of the powerful, amazing people on the committee was the perfect end to my academic journey,"
Give it up to Alana Carney, we will miss you Madam President!! <3

Dance UL is extremely proud of one of our very own Class Coordinators Julie Brennan, who won the Paddy McHugh Best Fresher Award at this year’s Clubs and Societies Ball. Julie is incredibly deserving of this honour, and has achieved a great amount since joining Dance UL in September of 2016. Intrinsic to her role as Class Coordinator is the responsibility to handle monetary interactions and sign Dance UL members in prior to each class and workshop — a hefty commitment alongside the challenges of a Bachelor of Law. Julie has surpassed the expectations of this role with her ability to encourage and aid Dance UL members, addressing numerous queries and concerns. She has been a very reliable team player on Dance UL’s committee, faithfully attending meetings and covering for members who were in need of assistance. She has promptly responded to health and safety concerns, and has always made herself available to help organise the various array of events coordinated by Dance UL throughout the year. Julie’s consistently positive attitude has captured the hearts of both the committee and society members, and we could not be more proud to support her candidacy for the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Fresher Award!
Julie has also added to the vibrancy of Dance UL with her own unique choreography, and has graced the stage with her many talents as a dancer. She represented UL on the Hip Hop, Contemporary and Jazz intervarsity teams, and was an integral addition to each of these pieces. Her beautiful stage presence, admirable technique and enthusiasm to teach and learn shone through lengthy and gruelling rehearsals leading up to the All Ireland Intervarsity Competition, and have persisted beyond this point. Dance UL will continue to thrive with Julie’s hard work and dedication, cultivating an exciting environment for all who are passionate about dance. Congratulations Julie, and best of luck at the 2017 BICS National Society Awards ceremony!

Calling all those who incorporate a ruthless hairbrush dance into their morning routine - this one’s for you! Dance UL has been working diligently to provide each and every one of you the opportunity to explore a different genre of dance each week of the semester, with our highly anticipated Workshops every Wednesday.
We kicked off the semester in week 3 with international choreographer Riman Rafi, hailing all the way from Toronto, Canada and pushing the limits of dynamic expression with his uniquely challenging and incredibly fun Hip Hop choreography. If you were unable to participate in his workshop, fear not, for we have many more on the way!
In week 5 our very own Dance UL committee member and choreographer Jocelyn Ip is teaching her renowned Heels workshop! She is the embodiment of a fierce, strong and spirited dancer whose style will unleash your inner sass. Join us on February 22nd at 7:00 pm in EGO-10 (the Main Building) for a two hour session packed with powerful technique and some of that unrivalled attitude. Week 6 will feature another one of our talented committee members, Ana Camillo, whose stunning Gypsy Dance choreography is known to steal the hearts of all who witness her vivacious performances. Ana’s workshop is another that you will not want to miss, and will be held in the same location (EGO-10) on Wednesday, March 1st. No dance experience is necessary!
Workshops will continue to run every Wednesday of the semester, so don’t miss your chance to join in! Dancers must be registered with Dance UL in order to participate. For those of you who are craving more Hip Hop, Dance UL Intervarsity choreographer Jessica Keyes will be leading a highly anticipated workshop on Wednesday, March 29th! Jessica has co-choreographed and performed in award-winning Hip Hop pieces, and has returned to the stage as Head Choreographer, representing UL at this year’s All Ireland Intervarsity Dance Competition in March. Her workshop will provide Dance UL members with the opportunity to learn exciting new choreography from an extremely seasoned and passionate dancer, so whip out those calendars and mark the date!
Additional to Dance UL’s classes and workshops, we engage in events with other clubs and societies and would love for you to join us in upcoming table quizzes, dance nights, and of course, the End of Semester Showcase, featuring all of our dancers onstage at the Johnathan Swift Theatre. Stay tuned for further developments in the dance world in and around campus by following Dance UL on Facebook, Instagram (officialdanceul) and Snapchat (DanceUL). As always, the committee and teachers are greatly looking forward to seeing both fresh and familiar faces throughout the semester.

In March of 2016, Dance UL sent four teams to the All Ireland Intervarsity Dance Competition at Trinity College in Dublin. For the first time in seven years, this included a team that fulfilled the “mixed” category— an amalgamation of genres including Hip Hop, Contemporary, Irish, and Jazz. The dancers collaborated under the expert direction of Conor O’Brien to create powerful choreography reflecting their various styles, personalities and dynamics in order to tell one fluid story. The choreography was set to an original score of music, created by the fantastically talented Scott Robinson, which further added to the unique quality of the piece. The performance wove a strong sense of familial celebration through a period of mourning, culminating in an epic battle for dominance and justice. The final roar of the music coupled with the audience’s tumultuous applause echoed the euphoria of the performance, such that a month later, all involved felt the piece should live on through a more permanent forum.
Thus began Dance UL’s partnership with Crooked Teeth, an independent film company headed by Conor O’Brien, Evan Fanning and Scott Robinson. The mixed piece was to live forever as a short film, and the whole operation was henceforth donned project:ULTIMATE. A massive effort ensued: location scouting, advertising, funding, costume and makeup artistry, scheduling, food and morale for the cast and crew, and hours of daily filming in brisk Irish temperatures. After immense amounts of editing, Crooked Teeth is proud to announce the coming release of project:ULTIMATE on October 28, 2016!
Crooked Teeth and Dance UL would like to extend an enormous thank you to those who generously donated to project:ULTIMATE. All of the support not only facilitated the production process, but served as a major motivational force for the entire team. It is with great pride and anticipation that we enter the final countdown to releasing the finished product, which has stemmed from an extremely strong family bond shared by the dancers and the crew. Follow Dance UL and Crooked Teeth on Facebook to catch the film’s release! You will NOT want to miss the unique opportunity to experience the whirlwind of action, artistry, precision, emotion and passion that ensues!!
