About Underwater Hockey Club

About Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey (also known as Octopush) is a 3-dimensional team sport played in swimming pools around the world.

UWH is a great way to keep fit, improve confidence and skills in the water and meet new people. Its a low impact on the joints and is non-contact so suitable for all ages and abilities and the teams are mixed with guys and girls.

UWH attracts recovering field sports athletes and a host of outside-the-box thinkers. It is a natural transition for wild swimmers, freedivers, and snorkellers over the winter months as the evenings get darker and a great way to upgrade your skills

For us, it is all about having fun and making the most out of the UL experience.

Drop us a message and come along to our famous Give-It-A-Go sessions

What is Underwater Hockey (OctoPush)?

Well, this video should help clear things up and we love to talk about it, so feel free to ask any questions.

First developed in the UK in the 1950s as a fun way to keep scuba divers active during the dark winter months. It quickly grew into a competitive sport and spread throughout the world.

Each team has 10 players, with 6 in the water at each time. The aim of the game is to push or move the puck using a stick to the other end of the pool and into the goal mouth.

Each player will wear basic underwater equipment, fins, masks, snorkel, and polo cap

Training

Wednesday nights @ 9pm poolside (25m Dive pool)

Training will include

  • Fin Swimming (We will teach you to swim 25m underwater on one breath!)
  • Snorkeling technique
  • Puck Handling (Stick work)
  • Relay races
  • Tactical positioning underwater
  • Finish with a Game

 Tournaments

UL UWH aims to host at least 1 tournament each semester.

"Try-It-Out" - October mini-tournament will be a friendly mixed team event set up specifically to allow beginners to meet other teams and play in their first game.

"The Battle for the West" - November tournament will be a hard fought Irish league style competition, were we will aim to defeat our rivals from DCU, UCD and Queens.

Internationally each year we are invited to the following events:

  1. Celtic Cup Between Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
  2. Student Nationals in Leeds hosted by the BOA
  3. Bud Pig Cup in the Czech Republic (Outdoor pools & spa)

There will be a host of other fun international tournaments and events happening throughout the year so plenty of chances to travel, compete and meet new people.
